We were lucky today that we had a nice slow morning before having to head off at around 1.15pm. We tied up our loose ends, giving tips to our favourite staff (a barman who had made us a lot of cocktails & a pool-slide attendant that was slack in his duties, which meant the kids could come down the slide however they liked !!) We also passed on our bottles of tequila as they were heavy & could not be taken on as hand luggage. The youngest children had their final dance performance at t...
Santa Monica, California, United States knipes_usaToday we awoke to just another perfect LA day - not a cloud to be seen, and a forecast of around 27C. I'd hate to be a farmer here, as it never seems to rain. The Dads got up early and went to get our hire cars and we were off to Universal Studios after a quick brekky. The GPS was great to get us there with all the freeways going everywhere. The place was very quiet indeed, which was great for us. The waits for the rides were typically 5 minutes, with us walking straight onto most of them, ex...
Santa Monica, California, United States knipes_usa Today we got up early so that we could get to our 9.00am Warner Brothers VIP Studio Tour. We were a bit spooked by the threat of the nasty traffic that LA is famous for, so we left at around 7.30 and used directions that Hel had mapped out looking at Google maps rather than using the GPS. Luckily we did as the silly cow in the GPS got all confused and even when we had arrived at Warner Bros she was still trying to send us back somewhere else !!
The tour went for around 2 hours and incl...
Today most had a bit of a sleep in as I took one of the 2 cars we had hired back to Avis, which was a short stroll on a foggy Satdee morning. After brekky we were all in readiness for our next adventure - a 4 hour tour of Hollywood & surrounding areas in a 1966 Red Open-top Cadillac.
Johnnie, our driver was excellent as he took us to many places & explained a whole lot about what we were seeing. In short we did :-

... a massive splash that saturated him from head to toe.

The day was a success as James had wanted to go on the Big Thunder Mountain when he was last there 1989 however never got the chance and Nicky has wanted to go since she can remember. Unfortunately we missed a photo with Mickey Mouse as we were a bit embarrassed to queue with very small children.
Santa Monica, California, United States cyo... bus and this time tried to find Rodeo Drive... with ours eyes open! Again the bus driver shouted at us to jump off and we found ourselves right in the middle of Beverly Hills... and feeling very under dressed! (Combats, 'fiji-ed' tshirts and flipflops are not Beverly Hills attire!) After some window-shopping (Rodeo Drive does not accomodate the backpacker budget!) we jumped back on the bus back towards Santa Monica. We had seen the 'Avenue of the Stars' on the ...
Los Angeles, California, United States global2809I'm sure many people love LA. Go there, have great times, and leave with good memories. When I think of LA now, a total feeling of disdain washes over me and I can almost taste something bitter in my mouth. Its safe to say we didn't like it. It started bad and kind of went from there. We got the Greyhound Bus from Vegas to LA. Bad mistake. It was filled with every pimp, *****, and general bad person imaginable. The fact that ...
Los Angeles, California, United States freetime... sumptuous dinner at the legendary Musso & Frank's that I know best from the great Los Angeles crime novels of Michael Connolly featuring the hard-bitten homicide detective Hieronymus (Harry) Bosch. Andrew has a lot of good ideas to share with me and we have a lot of smiles talking about our pal Frenchy and how well his movie project was going. We had a nice joint on our way to Hollywood & Cahuenga and the Tom Morello night at the popular Hotel Caf ...
