The Matterhorn

... used my final day of my eurrail pass for this trip only to find that the trip from Visp station to the Zermatt was not valid despite being told by two train operators that it was. I also couldn't get through to the girl at the station that my eurrail pass allows me discounts for the train but she kept telling me, 'no, no, you can't use anymore days it's full'. Today wasn't the first time I have been stuffed around by the Swiss. It's hard to believe that Einstein was educated here.

The 3 M's - Mountain goats, Maccas and Matterhorn

... over his chair and almost fell over backwards himself! It was quite comical! He did eventually pay and walked out in quite a huff, we saw him further down the street still examining his receipt and shaking his head!

The first part of our journey took us to Visp where we boarded the ‘Glacier Express’. This train takes you through the mountain region below Zermatt and the Matterhorn and shows off some beautiful Swiss scenery before finishing in the ...

Back down from the Matterhorn

We woke "late" (8am) and were the last to leave our bunk. Skipping breakfast, we began our 5 hour journey back to Zermatt. We chose a route that would give us a different view of the valley, but involved 1800m of decent. We paid for it for the next few days. We arrived at our apartment and ...

Hike to the Base of the Matterhorn

Farmor agreed to watch Evie and Tyler for 2 days while Sue and Tom hiked to Hornlihut, the refugio at the base of the Matterhorn. Hornlihut is at 3200m directly below the Matterhorn (4400m) and serves as the base camp for those ascending the Matterhorn. When we called for reservations, they asked if we were ...

Gimmelwald: For the Swiss Alps in Your Lap

... speak for themselves here, but if you decide to visit Switzerland and dont go to the Jungfrau Region, then your trip is a FAILURE!  This is why people vacation in Switzerland.  The fondue was cool, but it needs to be Americanized, but for everything else its Switzerland > USA.

... two and end up staying a week or longer. the owners Walter and Petra are amazing they are so friendly and easy to get along with, they actually hang out and interact with you while you stay, they have a big kitchen here and everybody prepares their own meals, such a great time. i am sad i have to leave tomorrow morning to make my way to Munich, but oh well, another journey and experience to have. but i would have to say this place is going to be almost impossible to beat.

I'm on a Swiss kezboard. Please excuse the tzpos.

... there (paying more attention to the forecast ahead of time). As 5 of us took the cable car down, James, the looney from B.C., decided to run down. We had climbed for 5 hours and gone up 1700 meters. He made it down in an hour. Three days later, his ankle was still bothering him. Hmmmm.... As we stopped for groceries on the way down, Grant found out that you can't really just buy one clove of garlic. We all thought that was really funny ...

Welcome to the Swiss Alps

... the mounatins but we were actually in the clouds so we would have to pray for sun tomorrow to see the actual grandeur of the mountian ranges. That night we feasted on delicous cheese fondue (from local cheese) and had tasty swiss sausage and rosti. The chef Mani (and owner) was quite a good cook. We went to bed early in our mountian side room to try and wake up early in hopes to take a gondala up in the morning to Schilthorn for glorious mountain views. May 24 ...
