How much do you think it would cost to put 200 litres of petrol into a bus to get me from Margarita Island to Puerto Ordaz? As I'm sure many of you are aware petrol is super cheap in Venezuela, but I think it’s worth pointing out just how cheap it is. The answer to my question is BsF10… which is $2 on the black market, or using the less favourable fixed official rate of exchange, still only around $5 ...

Puerto Ordaz, Bolívar, Venezuela snaekolfurOur last two days in Venezuela... Picked a posada from the Lonely Planet and grabbed a cab from the airport. Our washing was able to walk there on it's own. 2 weeks and not a crumb of OMO in sight and our clothes honk to high heaven. We spent the evening lurking around in our last items of clothing and having budget backpacker dinners as we ran out of US dollars and have nothing to exchange on the black market for local currency. Reluctantly had ...
Cuidad Bolivar, Guayana Highlands, Venezuela theblakes... friend the waiter could obviously see that we had both aged 50 years since last night, due to all the stress throughout the day. So he offered to sneak us some beer. All adam had to do was drink a can of sprite and then he would refill the can with beer. Genious! Never seen adam so happy. He wanted to tip him every bolívar we had. Karrina talked him into giving him a less extreme tip. After dinner went home to sleep. Had to awake at 6am for the tour!!
Ciudad Bolivar, Venezuela karrinaEnglish No picture for this chapter because clever as I am, I went on the trip with my camera out of battery ... to do short, we have arrived this morning at ciudad guayana at 5am after 4h of waiting at Madrid airport, 9h of flight, 1 hour of taxi and 10 hours of bus !! 1st observation about venezuelian transports: they over use the ...
Ciudad guayana, Venezuela mariaclement... I couldn't really see what type of medical procedures was being performed, but it sure looked like they were trying to revive a dead man. The frenetic activity eventually ceased and they brought out a body bag. I don't know who that person was, or what life he led, or which friends/family he had. I can only assume that eh would have been thankful to still be in that "s-thole" of a city today. At that moment, I was.

Ciudad Guayana, Venezuela alezgAfter the Roraima trek, I stayed in San Francisco for a couple days, and had chance to venture into Brazil for a day...Then took a 12 hour overnight bus to Ciudad Bolivar, where I got some relaxation by the Hotel La Cumbre poolside. The same day I flew back to Caracas and ended this stay in Venezuela at Machuto Beach, in Hotel Santiago.
San Francisco - Pakaraima, Brazil - Ciudad Bolivar - Machuto, Central Venezuela, Venezuela passionfruitHey everyone, hope you are all keeping well. After our last log in Caracas we took an overnight bus to Ciudad Bolivar, a city on the banks of the Orinioco river. The bus was very comfortable (and our sleeping bags came in nice and handy), definitely a good way to travel. The roads here are very good too. The bus journey took a total of 8 and 3 quarter hours and we arrived in Ciudad Bolivar just after 6 in the morning on Friday. Before arriving ...
Ciudad Bolivar, Venezuela treasaorHola from Venezuela! We have arrived in Santa Elena and are getting back in the grove of three meals a day and good nights rest. The place we will be living at for the next two weeks is wonderful. It is a hotel of sorts, run by a Italian and German couple who have been in South America for 10+ years. The accommodations are basic, but quite nice. It is about a 30min walk outside of the city, up the hills into the jungle. So, it is quite, well except for the birds and monkeys. We ...
