Vandaag stond deel 2 van de Vanderbilt-saga op het programma. Na de Vanderbilt mansion in de Hudson Valley, was het ditmaal de beurt aan The Breakers. Een imposant bouwwerk, zowel van buiten als van binnen. Newport was eind 19e eeuw de place to be voor rijke New Yorkers in de zomer. Heel de buurt ligt vol gezaaid met gigantische optrekjes, geï …

... night to make sure everything was safe and sound and the following day, the volunteers working the show, along with the police, were asking show folks how best to help us. It was heaven.

The other best part of this town was that our friends Glen, Barbara, Gina and Andy all made the trip out to see the show and hang out with us. It was as though no time had passed when seeing them (well, with Gina & Andy...we'd ...

... The other thing that stood out was the poor state of repair. I was told that the battleship was experiencing problems covering its costs and may close down. I wonder what will happen to it. I think it should be in Boston harbor. From the battleship, we went aboard the destroyer. We walked around the main deck then headed to shore. The museum also has two Torpedo Boats like the PT-109 the had been commanded by John F Kennedy. I ...

... for the designing of the facade and Great Hall of the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the pedestal of the Statue of Liberty. The house was designed in the Italian Renaissance style between 1893 & 1895 with 70 rooms in total! I'm fairly sure it was the ultimate game of hide and seek! As Vanderbilt wanted to build the house on a deadline he had some rooms created in studios and warehouses in France before being dismantled and shipped to Newport where they would ...

    Worst Western The Mainstay Inn

    from

This is a hotel that really needs a thorough reconstruction! We stayed in one of the old wings. The long long corridor looked like that of an eastern european building. Many of the doors had the number hand-written on them, or on a piece of paper. The room was in the same tradition: bleak, no atmosphere whatsoever, ironing board standing against an ugly cupboard. The restaurant doesn't deserve this name: no atmosphere, tv too loud with sports during dinner. The hotel never made me feel welcome at all, neither did the people at the reception when we left: hardly any smile, moreover they made a mistake with the check which they seemed reluctantly willing to correct. Okay, the food in the restaurant was good, although it took a long wait before we had it. But they apologized for that, which brings me to a second more favourable point: the people in the restaurant were on the whole very helpful and friendly, although they seemed to be in great need of organization: they seemed incompetent of serving a relatively small number of people efficiently and aptly. Yes, this hotel certainly needs reconstrction: it's the Worst Best Western I've ever stayed in!

    Check Renovation Progress B4 Booking

    from

This is your standard place to sleep if you cannot find anything else or are too cheap to pay for it. We were walk in's on a damp, foggy night and just tickled pink to get off the road for $79.

The place is undergoing quite the renovation project. There were several new doors installed, new door signs and plenty of furniture and mattresses in the stair landings.

If you plan to visit this area (rather than just pass through), our suggestion would be to spring for a few more bucks and get into a nicer place. If you do plan an extended visit, you should at the very least check on the progress of the renovations and keep checking TripAdvisor to see how it is going.

Consider youself armed with this knowledge when you book.

As long as you go in with low expectations...

    from

...you won't be disappointed. We were in town for a wedding and this was among the few hotels under $200 that was close to Downtown Newport and its attractions. Make sure to request a room in the main (new?) part of the hotel accessible from the lobby and not one of the wings. The hotel should maybe invest the $s it's spending on sprucing up the lobby on rennovating the rooms???

    Would not recomend this hotel

    from

When we made our reservation we were not told the hotel was under renovation, I would never have chosen it if they had. Most of the hotel was near compleation with new carpets but no paint or trim....Smell was very bad, not new and clean at all.

    Sans prétention

    from

    Great price for Newport

    from

To pay under $200/nt in Newport and have a place 5 minutes from town is great. I've never had problems with rooms or service. Restaurant is good for breakfast as eggs/hash browns are awesome.

I was surprised at other reviews b/c I've stayed here at least 5 times and never had a problem. Got a corner room twice which gives a lot of extra space.

Newport is an expensive town and having a place like this to stay allows extra cash to be spent on great dinner and drinks.

    Don't Stay here....

    from

I was confirmed with a non-smoking room and 2 double beds. Upon arrival, I received a smoking room in the basement. It was awful! You look out the window (at least there was one) and you are eye level with the sidewalk. Window wouldn't even lock - so I felt VERY safe. When I went back to the office, I was told my group was given the "economy" rooms. Thanmks for the favor. However, we were never told they were in the basement and to get there you had to walk through a hallway that smelled like bathroom and stale smoke - not that fresh smoke smells good but you get the drift. Oh they were accomodating..we could get a "good" room for $20 more. When I asked why I was confirmed with a non-smoking room and yet received a smoking room, they replied, "Oh it must have been a mkistake." No, the mistake was that I stayed there. I should have walked out the door. It was the absolute worst hotel room I have EVER had. I kissed that $300 goodbye!

Don't spoil a weekend of great jazz with this lousy hotel

    from

Upon visiting Newport for the very first time, we were immediately impressed with the nature of the area, the historical downtown, and of course, the 50th anniversary of the newport jazz fest. Nothing could spoil it...until we stepped into this hotel. Yikes. The first room we were offered was underground, in a hallway that reaked of sewage. Just to give our room a fair shake, we stepped inside...and unless you like carpet with the look and feel of a fairway, forget it. Everything stunk. My friend immediately called to change rooms, and we were told the only other option was a smoking room. More stink, but better view...of the garbage dumpsters out back. The only perk we could find was the window that opened to allow a semblance of a breeze to get rid of the smoky smell. staff, they were okay...some were helpful and knowledgable of the area, others were clueless. The entire experience was a real let-down, and a huge juxtaposition to the fantastic jazz festival. oh...and did i mention that on the weekend, this place ran an unbelievable $199 a nite? Don't even think twice about it--book yourself a B&B on the ocean.

    Pricey

    from

This place seemed a little pricey for the service and rooms.

The front desk clerk was not that friendly, rooms look kinda old, beds were uncomfortable.

Cheaper than downtown and the water though
