97 Rajpur Road Dehradun, Uttarakhand, India, 248001, 135-274-9990
Tuesday, May 20 The trip up to Dehradun went well. According to Dr. Eaton, we got lucky and made it out of Delhi in much less than the expected 3 hours, and made it here in about 6. Delhi was shockingly poor, overcrowded, and filthy. The streets are lined with garbage, dirty water, mud, shacks, tires, cows, dogs (alive and dead), scooters, bikes, motorcycles, auto-rickshaws, and millions of people doing the daily grind. The daily grind as visible from the bus window: street vending; sorting t...
Dehradun, India adomingo4Wednesday, May 21st (1st whole day in Dehradun): Prof. Eaton decided not to start class yet, so we could get settled in and get our cell phones. We had our first Hindi class after breakfast. The teacher is really enthusiastic about the philosophy of language, and talked more about the power of language as something that is immortal and connects us to God, the cosmos, and each other, then teaching us Hindi. I thought it was appropriate to get us enthusiastic about learning a new language so we...
Dehradun, India adomingo4[very difficult to read handwriting] After an emergency bathroom break, when 5 of our number trooped out to behind a thatched hut into the woods behind, and shortly after a woman in a bright pink sari emerged smiling a big smile, the first boy returned and said gruffly "There's monkeys." Indeed! We are traveling through a national park. More observations-I am, as Sara warned, about a foot taller than anyone here. I often have to duck through doorways and on second floors.
Dehradun, Uttarakhand, India sarahcarrieLast Sunday we went to the National Museum. Same old-cultures, eras, broken pottery and frayed textiles of these cultures and eras. It was moderately interesting, but we mostly went to get out of the heat. We went into the theater and dumbly watched a baffling film about a golden statue of Buddha (I think) before Jenny said to me "What are we watching?" which surpassed my favorite thing she said-the first morning, sleepily before we'd said anything else "So...the beds are hard." I may not hav...
Dehradun, Uttarakhand, India sarahcarrieYesterday was mostly spent resting and reading. It was heavenly! I don't know what I would have done if I'd gone to Yamunotri with the group. Saturday we had a nice night at a restaurant the Black Pepper. The food was great (we all over-ate), and having just the small company of Dr. Zonn, Jenny, and Sarah there, too. Most of Sunday, as I said, I rested. A lot. We went back to the Opal Lounge, where Friday's evening out (ostensibly for Travis's birthday) took place. We watched the cricket fina...
Dehradun, Uttarakhand, India sarahcarrie... a lot and we would be seeing a lot of him in the last days of our stay in Rishikesh. After this we made it just in time to the sitar concert which was on the top floor of a hotel overlooking the river (pretty much everything over looks the Ganges here). It was incredible. A young girl did some sort of traditional dance, a Tibetan looking fellowed played the sitar, and there was an amazingly experienced tabla drum player. In the middle of it, the intense storm that had brewed ...
Rishikesh, Uttarakhand, India mattarah... idealist and his opinions occasionally clashed with my cynical world view, but I enjoyed his company greatly. Tamar is also a nice girl, but is very quiet and seems content to let Boaz do most of her talking. Boaz spent a year in India 7 years ago after he left the army, and says he's been dreaming of a return ever since. They'll be spending most of their time trekking, but will be in Rishikesh for at least 5 or 6 days which was good to hear.
Rishikesh, India lnb203... reverse in the breeze, criss-crossing to form hundreds of thousands undulating, light kissed waves and rivulets. She evokes a lightness of being, and a natural, flowing happiness that I lost access to long ago, if I ever knew it at all in this lifetime. At some point, I chant the 108 Names of Baba Lokenath with her water gently lapping over my feet. Then I walk barefoot the short distance away to the Sivananda Kutir - a small little chapel where the great Hindu ...
Rishikesh, Uttarakhand, India globalgramma... But foolishly this was only the beginning. As we pulled in further downstream, we realised that this is the spot where rafters can really give their heart a fright as we saw another group mounting a 30 foot tall rock and then jumping into the water below. Now I´m not sure whether it was the adrenalin still in my system after the bodysurfing, but I actually went along with this madness! But however high up it looked from below, once we climbed up to the rock and I looked down ...
Rishikesh, Uttarakhand, India kealderra... games on his phone. Theres no chance of you going hungry on Indian trains, the many food sellers make sure of that, walkiung up and down the train shouting their own mantra of food, some are quite interesting to decipher. "Tarraa marrta zoooop" one says, going up at the the end, this is tomato soup man. My particular favourite was one with a rather high pitched voice shouting "chiiiiiiiips, crisppppies", I enjoyed that. The train hurtled across India, which ...
