... steep to get down to the shore, it’s hard to imagine how difficult the soldiers had it. Seeing the sight at Omaha Beach really made me feel proud to be an American. After the beach, we drove onward to Saint-Malo, which is on the coast, and is a walled city. We stayed at a cute little hotel, similar to a B&B and had dinner at a nice restaurant, too bad I ordered my steak too rare…<br>
Caen, Normandy, France liz.swind... at each scene on the tapestry. Without it you would find it hard to depicher the story and miss the little details which bought the tapestry to life. <br> The town of Bayeux itself is gorgeous and miracouslouly escaped WWII bombing...even though it was only 10km inland from the D-Day beaches
Bayeux, Normandy, France darrenhough74... we drove past Courseulles code name Juno Beach and onto Arromanches code name Gold Beach and where the famous Mulberry Harbour was built. <br><br>The Mulberry Harbour was made by the British. Over a dozen old ships on their last voyage were intentionally sunk as the foundation of the harbours break wall. Several dozen extremely large concrete blocks which were transported across the seas ...
Arromanches-les-Bains, Normandy, France darrenhough74Arrived at Ouistreham just before dark and found an Aire de Service right on the beach and this time it was free! The downside was it was right next to the ferry terminal and the 6am ferry to Portmouth the next day was kill the tranquilo the next morning. Kim's Maison du Scooby cooked up a storm. Pork fajitas on rice - delicious. I gave it 5 stars.
Ouistreham, Normandy, France darrenhough74... many. My French guide made the comment as we explored Normandy... "I may have been speaking German now to you if it were not for those that fought here." Their sacrifice affects many, and touches many... as my guide gave us the details of the American Cemetery, the Australian man next to me had to excuse himself. There is not much else to say, but, Thank you.

Bayeux, Normandy, France cariverga... right there*. It felt like sacred ground. The whole day was very awesome, very interesting, very humbling, and very educational, but two particular points stand out. First, we were able to see one of the so called Mulberry Harbors at Arromanches. The Mulberry Harbors were temporary marinas created by the Allies, who scuttled ships damaged in the initial attacks, then dragged in large concrete bars on top of them to create a breakwater and ...
Caen, France dyer0930... a little bit. After dinner we had walked down to the beach. Now, I don't remember exactly how we got to this, but, through some random events, Agathe and I made a bet. If I went skinny dipping in the ocean on the beach in plain daylight, right then and there, she would pay for my bungee jump. We're talking 90 euros here.... I did it! It was crazy... probably one of the craziest things I've ever done. This video, I don't think I'll be posting on the ...
Caen, Normandy, France davidofcali... hopefully walk the labyrinth. And then, my train ticket takes me back to Paris on Saturday. However, I'm thinking I don't want to stay in Paris - it's very expensive, and it's Bastille Day on Monday (pandemonium, I'm told). So I'm thinking of heading off to the Loire area. However, dear readers, if you have a suggestion for the best way to spend three days in France before my flight back next wednesday (16th), please send them along. K
Caen, Normandy, France cleanslate... why Africa doesn't smell that way. I'm sure they use manure...perhaps it's too hot or dry to really spread the good word round the town? Limoges rolled by, this time on the motorway, and I stopped in Poitiers for the night. Poitiers is, by it's own guide book's admission 'undergoing regeneration'. This means it is a **** hole in the middle of a building site. It smacks of Reading, down to its soulless city centre, depressing university ...
