Ketchikan, and Misty Fjords

... of protected forest and seaways – it is larger than the State of Connecticut, and only accessible by plane or sea. Throughout our tour, we encountered many protected areas and national parks which were not put under federal administration until the 1970’s. There was an omnibus bill Jimmy Carter signed in 1980 which created new and expanded old protested areas, and is now universally praised, while ...

The Salmon Capital of the World!

June 20 was a very busy day. We were invited to a Tea as well as an Anniversary/Honeymoon party. In addition, we had dinner at a special restaurant on board the ship. The restaurant was called the SS United States. We had Salmon Mousse, Caesar Salad prepared tableside, and Steak Diane prepared tableside. John had the cheese plate and chocolate souffle and I had Creme Brulee for dessert.

We ...

... pretty wet by the time we wandered through the cruise line tourists and got to Anabelle’s for lunch. We enjoyed our lunch and took our time drinking a couple Alaskan Amber beers and eating fish and chips made from local halibut. The Deckhand Diaries

... one is, get it!" Swoosh, splash...Grab it! All I feel is water...reaching...Got the tail! "****!" The tiny salmon shot through my legs into the eddy behind me. "He's right there," I yelled "Gary, grab it!" Here comes Mark doggie paddling through the pool below to usher more salmon into our trap. Finally, after much plunging, diving, splashing and slipping on mossy rock, Gary grabbed a salmon and held him just long enough for young ...

Alaska Diving

... was a lot of stuff to go wrong, but we weren't diving for long or deep, so safety wise the danger was low. I will remind all that, every time you dive, you are at risk for decompression sickness, and I am not minimizing or marginalizing that risk, I do understand. But to hit a max of 70' for about one minute and to ascend slowly (speed of ascent is probably the number one contributing factor for deco sickness) to the safety stop really remains well within ...

Petersburg to Ketchikan

... make a lot of jokes about the rain in Ketchikan, such as asking a kid how long it has been raining. Answer: "I don't know; I'm only eight years old." The annual rainfall is over 160 inches here, making it one of the rainiest spots in North America. But we soon found a cozy and cheerful restaurant to have dinner, with a beautiful neon sign in its bar. Alaska Amber is in fact very good beer.

Ketchikan Shore Excursion

... being cared for - a bald eagle and an owl. There were also some caribou (the North American word for reindeer) that we had the opportunity to feed. They were awesome and I could have spent hours feeding them branches but alas we had more to do. The final part of the tour was an old decommisssioned lumber mill. It was interesting to see - the timber industry was Ketchikan's reason for existence, prior to the influx ...

Ketchikan, AK

Hey everyone - Today was another great day. We slept in and docked in Ketchikan around 2:00 in the afternoon. Tony and I have taken to sitting out on the fantail of the ship when it sails. It is so nice, the sun is out, we see whales and beautiful scenery. We are having a really great time. We went into town and did a little shopping (actually, I did the shopping while Tony sat outside. Funny how all those shops had benches outside with men sitting on them ...
