... their independence from Spain in 1811. The constitution was ratified in 1830. Uruguay has a socialist government. The current president is Jose Mojica, an interesting character. He donates 90% of his salary to charity, he refuses to live in the presidential palace, but lives on his farm in the suburbs. He uses the presidential palace only for official functions.
