... br> US Highway 66 [ aka "Main Street USA"] stretched 2400 miles from Chicago, Illinois to Santa Monica, California. During the Great Depression of the 1930's, Route 66 became the road for travelers who headed west for a better life. In the 50's and 60's many families and dreamers traveled these roads and restaurants, motels, and tourist attractions grew until I-40 was built. Now the towns and businesses are not so lively. Through Clovis

A travel blog entry by k.c77 on Nov 13, 2014

As I made my way through Clovis I stopped at a rest station to stretch and get a bite to eat. They had a really cool restaurant called Thai City and I ate the Golden Dragon for $10.95. After that I got gas at a Chevron for $41.66.

High on my bucket was (and I say was) Taos. Poor Tom drove about nine hours, some of them in a raging rain storm. Taos was a bust. We immediately headed for Santa Fe.
The ride, however to Taos was nothing short of spectacular. The landscapes were like paintings. We traveled through sage brush fields and majestic mountains. We miss so much of this beautiful country when we travel by plane.
