She has been 'traveling'... to more places than I had in the last week!

We headed to Lake Bled, Slovenia today. Lake Bled is a mountain resort of Slovenia. It has a medium size lake (about 3.5 miles around) with a little island in the middle (Otok). It is very ...

Fairy tale Bled

... but by midday we had managed to pack our bags and off we went. For the next two hour we walked past fields of wild flowers, small villages and local farms all surrounded by the Julian Alps. When we finally reached Vintgar Gorge it didn't bother us to much that they expected paying, the sights are amazing and we assume they need the money for the upkeep of the wooden walkways which without the splendor of the gorge would most likely be hidden. At every ...

... some serious long distance touring trips some day. Forget it if you think I'm going to wear those spandex pants though! The travelblog will no doubt go into hibernation now, but this hasn't been a bad year has it? A couple of trips to Italy, one to Berlin, the unforgettable South Africa trip, Peterborough, and now this. I 'm satisfied for the time being. Roll on Feb 09 for NZ! Will add some more photo's later once back in the living room. Enjoy these few tasters.. I

Lake Bled

... shocked me. After discussing the election for awhile we discussed international politics such as the missile defense shield. They saw the defense shield as a direct challenge to Russia. I found it interesting that throughout the discussion one of the guys made it clear that he would almost automatically side with Russia in any conflict because they are also Slavs. While this may not be the viewpoint of the average Slovene, it at least ...

Geography Lesson #1

So here I am, day two in Zurich, brown cow but no chicken yet (inside joke, see photo). I spent the better part of the day on what I consider the best hike of my life. A expat (US), now living in Tazmania, told me to take the tram up to the hills. He said there I would find two huge cell phone towers, one of which could be climbed for an awesome view of the city. When I got there I found a zoo, a magnificent view ...

Chilly Ljubljana, still quite the place!

... Slovene fare and the place is very atmospheric between the architecture and the locals who frequent it. We had some coffee and a pear and apricot tart at Zvezda, the little kavarna in slascicarna (a café and patisserie with lovely cakes and tarts) just beside our hotel. The place is heaven! About four o'clock we met Marjorie and Stefan in Preseren square and walked to their home for tea and an afternoon visit. We've said it before but they are such a lovely ...

We also went out to dinner with all of the Ohio deligation (MY DAD WAS THERE FOR SOME CONFRENCE, SO HE BROUGHT THE FAM). Spelunking and driving in Slovenia

... to the foot of the hill in the center of town that has the castle on top. They just recently (last year) built a funicular railway that takes you straight up to the castle, so for 2 euros I rode it up. It's an old castle (I guess they all are), but they have it fixed up really nice with a great courtyard. There's a tower you can climb up for the best views all around of the city. After climbing the tower, I watched a 20-minute "virtual tour" which was ...

Travels through Italy, Croatia and Slovenia

... Day 251- Sunday 5th November - Korcula, Bosnia (for 15kms) to Jelsa - Croatia We got up bright and early and had coffee with Peter and Rebecca and then we all spent the morning chatting about property as Peter also does property development in New Zealand. We said our goodbyes and Peter had found out for us that the ferry we wanted to catch to Hvar was not operating on Sunday so we had to catch the ferry back to Orebic and drive back along the coast line where we had to pass through ...
