Gorgeous Clackamas

We drive alongside the Clackamas River, so beautiful we run out of adjectives as we point out to each other the views we want to share. Driving up towards the Cascades we see Mt. Hood in the distance, alone and majestic. At 4800 feet we drive through Santiam Pass and start the long road down, final destination Bend. We set up camp in Tumalo State Park. It is the weekend, there are so many people in the state parks we pass, we decide to stay two nights right here.

... town) we saw a very old man pitch forking hay into a trailer by the side of the road. We laughed at an advertisement for "Lock & Load Towing", and just outside Shaniko we saw a shoe tree--it was a tree that had been decorated with hundreds of old shoes!

The 2-lane road was slow, but scenic, with what we assumed was Mt. Ranier in the distance. There was a scenic viewpoint for the Crooked River Canyon ...

First Stop on the Rock and Road Trip: Smith Rock

... some recent snow! What a peak! Smith Rock and the Crooked Rock in all its glory. Our good friend Dave Snow came down to join us for the weekend! Dave and Ben worked together at Microsoft (in the Education Products Group) and have been climbing together since. Dave grew up in Washington and knows the local areas like no other ...

Bend

As we crossed over the mountains moving East from Eugene we hit lots of snow, which cleared once we made it over the pass. This would become a common theme in our many trips back and forth over the rocky (and associated) mountain ranges. We luckily had picked up a new set of tires and some snow chains in Eugene, which we were forced to employ only an hour after we ...

up to oregon and back - #2

... Diego and there were a bunch of people from San Diego staying at or visiting at David's place. Some were up for the weekend, some had relocated to Bend. Bend seems like an old town out of time, but it's really quite new... it was founded officially in 1905. (well that's kind of old, kind of new, depending on your scale.) when i think of Bend, i will think of... - breweries - the cleanest tap water you'll ever drink (after all, the "bend" is the ...

Whidbey Island and Bend, Oregon

Whidbey Island and Bend, Oregon Can there be anyplace nicer than the Pacific Northwest in the month of August? We liked it so much we decided to sponge off of our family and friends who have migrated here. Our method is to set up the trailer, Marshall cooks a lot of great meals, and I help with chores around the house. It seems to be working. We arrived on Whidbey Island after a short 30-minute ferry ride from Port Townsend on the Olympic Peninsula. As we were waiting for ...
