It's truly amazing the number of languages these people speak. With countries sometimes closer together than driving across Wisconsin to Illinois, communication is at a heightened level we just simply do not grow up experiencing. Most of us that ever took a foreign language in school, (I’m not one of them!), fail to have the opportunities daily to use it and the old phrase, "If you don’t use it you lose it", comes ...
Day 2. Decided to be totally N. American and have bacon and eggs for breakfast (we were very late out of bed - jet lag). 9 euros (from here on in all prices include VAT, tips and any other euro Surcharges). Fresh orange juice, English back bacon, one egg (sunny side, this is Europe!). Big smiles, no add ons. Did the tourist thing, 20e for a seniors (don't you love that) day pass on the double decker bus. Did 6 hours of exhaustive exploration of Barcelona. Learned how ugly ...
... to LA. Oh, how I miss Valencia... :( Estoy triste.
We hopped off before going too far and found the 44 bus to get us close to our hostel.
I was so tired. And also noticed I didn't eat much. Took an early shower and went for dinner nearby in my lonesome. Kinda nice, but kinda lonely if you know what I mean.
The guy on the top bunk, Brian from Belgium, were going to a flamenco show at a popular venue, but I was really tired. So I stayed ...
... to NYC, my dear friend Judy told me to look up and notice the architecture. Greatest piece of advice. I have been doing that for the past 36 hours and am astounded! Judes- I have to say, NYC pales in comparison to the architecture of this place! =) Gaudí has certainly left his mark here but beyond that, even simplest apartment buildings have the most darling designs.
Looking forward to more exploring and eating today but for now, Lady Mali, signing off!
... and crashed! This morning once everyone has sorted themselves out with waking up and having breakfast, we went out to the train station to catch train up the Costa Brava coastline (north of Barcelona). After getting our tickets and waiting for the train we finally got on to find out that we were on the wrong train!! Got off at the next train station where no one else seemed to speak English. Managed to get ...

Historical Traveler Reviews Hotel Acta Splendid Barcelona
Good for the money..
Stayed here for 3 nights over the new year, was happy with how clean and modern the rooms were and the staff were friendly. 10 minutes walk to Place Catalunya and there is a small 24h grocery store at the top of the street.
The main streets were safe at night but later on some of the side streets looked a bit seedy.
For the value, this is a great hotel to stay. Stayed for 9 nights, staff members are extemely friendly and accomodating. From the cleaning staff, front desk, and breakfast bar staff, they were very kind. Room was clean, nice and modern furnishings. The bathroom was clean and beautiful, all in marble. I would say this is one of the top 3 star hotels I have stayed in. Barcelona, I think set hight standsards for their 3 star hotels in general. Location was great, on a quiet street and close to the universidad metro. I walked around the neighborhood late night and found it relatively safe when I went out alone (39 yr male). Of course, I recommend safety precautions for all travlers.
Good value for the money
Stayed for 4 nightes in August 2004. The hotel is very quite and clean. 10 minuets walk from la Rambla. We ordered via the web and got great return for the money.
p.s. the hotel has changed its name from "Best Western Hotel Splendid"
Now called the Apsis Hotel Splendid
A group of 4 couples stayed in the Splendid to celebrate a couple of our 40th Birthdays. We found it to be very clean and the staff helpful. My wife and I had a Junior Suite which was excellent for us meeting together as a group. Bathrooms were particularly "splendid". Mini bar prices were reasonable. It took us about 10 minutes walk to the top of the Ramblas/Catalunya Square via main streets. I would not advise using side streets late at night but stick to main routes where we felt totally safe. There were some restaurants nearby, we ate in a Chinese which was very good. There is a 24 hr supermarket on same street as hotel (2 mins walk). All in all a great base at reasonable cost and I would recommend it to others.
Stayed at this hotel just before Christmas 2003.
The hotel is very clean and comfortable and the staff very friendly and helpful. They arranged for tickets to see Barcelona FC including a car from door to stadium and back again.
I would recommend this hotel to anyone staying in Barcelona, It's only 5/10 minutes from Placa de Catalunya.
Great location,helpful staff,and unusually quiet.Perfect!
The hotel is only a few minutes walk from Playa de catalunya and la Rambla, but once inside our room it was very quiet. There was no view as such from the window but this was more than made up in the care and attention the stuff gave us.
Buffet style breakfast was reasonable, even for a vegetarian. We were amazed that every day our room was serviced(we really became quite lazy). Only one small complaint though, on rainy days and we had several there were not any English speaking tv channels (except CNN), and of course the ones you have to pay for!
