Ausserbinn, Switzerland lesterenanne... The Hills Are Alive". You wouldn't fret looking like an idiot, because only the cows would be watching. That's the main industry at Gimmelwald, farming cows. The town is VERY tiny. Their park was about 10'x8' with 2 opposing benches. I agree with Steve that it's worth a quick visit, but don't know about that whole "If Heaven Isn't What It's Cracked Up To Be..." thing. I can think of other places I'd prefer to spend eternity as about one ...
Interlaken, Swiss Alps, Switzerland trockie... On Thursday I went begging for interviews. I went to Terre des Hommes (an organization that advocates for children's rights) and was able to secure one for Friday after being passed from person to person, trying to find someone who spoke english and worked on education. Begging for inteviews is a big deal for me, if you have ever been shopping with me you probably understand my fear of talking to strangers and asking for things. I also went to ...
Interlaken, Swiss Alps, Switzerland chelseyineurope... has been lovely while we've been here..perfectly clear and refreshingly cold. This morning I got up early and went to Mass at a church I found the afternoon before...it was all in German or Switza-Deutsche (as I was told it was called) and there were so few people that they simply put chairs up in the sanctuary around the altar. It was interesting, but so nice to be able to go to Mass! When I returned to the room everyone was still ...
Interlaken, Swiss Alps, Switzerland elizabethlelandWe were then supposed to take an overnight train to Bern Switzerland but I managed to **** that up royally and booked the train to Berne Germany, which is in the opposite direction... Jon was not impressed... and I only realized this 1 hr before our 10 pm train. So after hours of trying to rent a car (impossible during Oktoberfest) we got really lucky and found a car that needed to be returned to Switzerland anyways. So after a full day of ...
Interlaken, Swiss Alps, Switzerland sofenjon... town. Our bike ride took us through a park that overlooked Lac Léman. Naturally, we decided to take advantage of the beautiful view by eating lunch on a bench that faced the shore. Lunch today consisted of avocado, cheese and tomato sandwiches with grapes apples and water. And I know you're not supposed to swim within half an hour of eating, but we really couldn't wait, so we hopped back on our bikes and found our way down to the shore. Biking ...
Grindelwald, Swiss Alps, Switzerland nglick... to put in her checked bag. The knife had been completely missed in Rome. On this trip, they detected some twist-ties in Carrie's pocket that State College ignored. German efficiency. Our next flight was a quick 30 minutes to Zurich flughafen, where the Swiss did check our passports (in less than 5 seconds). The airport was full of advertisements for Euro 2008, the European soccer championships being held now in Switzerland and Austria. They have ...
Lauterbrunnen, Swiss Alps, Switzerland pdh... are required, which we had thanks to Mandy's previous experience, but some others were not at all prepared. We went out on to glacier and chucked snowballs at each other, and watched all the activities you can do. Tobogan, skiing, snowboarding, ziplines..... and they all cost more money. We didn't have the energy as just staying upright on the slippery snow was exhausting at this altitude. I think Mandy handled better than I did. A few times I felt dizzy and faint but a few deep breathes ...
Lauterbrunnen, Switzerland peteandmandyWe spent the majority of the summer locally, enjoying the paradise that is the Dutch summer. July was the hottest month in 100+ years, which was fantastic, while August was the wettest month in 100+ years (40% more than any other August on record). When combined, an average summer ! My cousin Sarah Shean bunked with us for a few days on her way back from a European adventure , so we did get a taste of Americana. We decided to get away for a weekend in early September, and after ...
Grindelwald, Switzerland the_mcdonoughs... to see what they could carve out of ice; polar bears, penguins, an igloo and the EU mouse. There is a section on the mountain where you can go out into the snow where there is also a large flagpole with the Swiss flag attached to in (the wind died so I can't honestly say the "Swiss flag flying proudly over the mountain.") It was strange to step on the snow and feel you feet crunch through the top layer to the softer stuff underneath, it reminded me of the thin ...
