but well worth the struggle with the GPS....what a beautiful place!
... interred there. In total, there are 12 emperors and 18 empresses entombed at this crypt, and many other family members. The most recent interment there was in 2011, and more Hapsburgs will be entombed there in the future.
This Crypt is the most fascinating and memorable thing that I saw in all of our time in Vienna. It is an amazing display of history, family pride, power, beauty, and the macabre. The Hapsburgs were pretty much the most powerful ...
... straight away handed over our Paul McCartney tickets which we’d had couriered there (instead of to the home address!).
Close by was not one, not 2, but 3 huge supermarkets so we headed there first off to stock up on picnicking needs, snacks etc. My first and most exciting find was at Aldi – punnets of raspberries for 77 cents!!!! I bought 4 in total (and would have bought more each day, but the sale ended!). We also found some fantastic vegan ...
... Opera that night :0) This meant that after intermission (only about 30min later) we would be able to leave if we had seen enough. It was neat, but nothing "wow". At times it was a little hard to hear the singers over the orchestra, and so it was nothing like Pavarotti. At intermission we decided to go eat. It was a quick escape since we all felt quite underdressed to say the least. Our jeans and sneakers were looking a little out ...
... 10 different fresh herb plants that were snipped off & put into boiling water to make tea tableside! It was kind of funny watching the waiters push these huge carts all over the dinning room from table to table.
I counted a total of 5 different waiters that served us - it becomes confusing as to what role everyone played. In fact, the waitress that took our order made a mistake that one of the other waiters missed & we had to correct him twice!
How has this hotel rated in the past?
Everything was perfect including the location. Room was beautiful with high cielings and nice, roomy bathroom.

Charming, adorable, just what I wanted
We live in nearby Slovakia, so while we are often in Vienna, we rarely stay over night. Who would have thought a Best Western could be charming? This schloss hotel is small and jewel-like. Our room had high ornate ceilings, crystal chandelier, comfortable bed! Price was good (159 euros including breakfast). If you prefer a boutique-type hotel, this is for you.
A real find!
We moved from a rather disappointing Hotel Elefant in Salzburg (which seems to close down for 3 days over Christmas)to the Romischer Kaiser in Vienna on Christmas Eve(2005). On arrival we were told 'as our Christmas present to you, we have upgraded you to a suite!'It was a wonderful start to a magical four nights in Vienna. We will probably return to the Romischer Kaiser this Christmas and I think that says it all.
This small, boutique style hotel, is nothing like what you'd expect in a Best Western (normally not our favorite place to stay). It is in a typical Vienna style, nicely restored building, located in a small, pedestrian oriented "Gasse" - one block from the pedestrian only shopping haven of Kaertnerstrasse, and within a 5 minute walk to the Staatsoper and the Stephansdom. Most (extremely clean)rooms have been beautifully remodeled (not all though), and the deluxe rooms feature an ornate ceiling, crystal chandelier, and Versace design bathroom - it's worth the extra money. The beds are comfortable with individual comforters for each guest, and they even offer non-smoking rooms - something you'll hardly find in anything but the most expensive hotels - if you're lucky. The service was excellent - the night attendant made us breakfast at 5am a couple of times when we needed to catch a tour or the flight home. We will definitely stay at this hotel again.
A secret treasure
We stayed in mid-November for the Christmas Markets. Chose this hotel based on earlier reviews and they were right. Charming little gem of a hotel hidden away but 2 minutes from pedestrian shopping areas and easy walks to main old-city points of interest. We were on the top floor in a small but beautifully furnished room. Staff were pleasant and helpful. We will go back to this hotel. Highly recommended.
We Loved it!!!!
We stayed in this hotel December 2004. It was everything we wanted - great location within walking distance to restaurants, attractions, shopping. The room was lovely and very romantic. The bathroom was all in pink and palatial with a huge bathtub! The staff was ever helpful & nice! We will stay here again.
Exceptionally convenient location. Staff friendly and try to be helpful. Rooms not large but very attractive. Rates are quite reasonable for style and situation of hotel. Would highly recommend Romischer Kaiser to anyone who wants to find classy and very well located hotel at affordable price in beautiful (but expensive) Vienna. Very near Stephansdom, Opera, shopping, and public transportation and within easy walking distance of most attractions yet on a quiet pedestrian street.
What a great choice we made when we chose this hotel for our Vienna stay! We couldn´t have been happier!
Adorable, clean, great value
Charming little hotel footsteps away from the Kartnerstrasse, a major shopping area of Vienna. It is off the main street, in fact cars are prohibited, except for the occasional taxi, keeping things very quiet and livable. It is a short walk to the opera house, the Naschmarkt on Saturday mornings, and the winter palace of the Habsburgs. The breakfast is outstanding - fresh fruit, cheeses and yoghurts. Rooms are a very decent size, and impecably clean!
Loved this hotel in Vienna!
After researching many hotels in Vienna, I decided on the Roemischer Kaiser because of its location. What a great decision! It's on a quiet pedestrian street, yet easy walking distance to St. Stephan's cathedral, the Opera House, the Ringstrasse and right around the corner from the lively pedestrian mall. We were really impressed with the beautiful furnishings of our room too. We had a Versace designed bathroom and a beautiful wood paneled bedroom with crystal wall sconces, crystal chandelier, and two small bay windows overlooking the quiet pedestrian walk street below. The breakfast in the lovely Vienese style cafe downstairs was excellent as well. This was the best hotel of our entire vacation and we look forward to staying there again!
