... Epernay, capital of the Champagne Region.

Once we made it outside of the Paris suburbs we found ourselves traveling through what could have easily been the countryside of any number of states in the US, corn and wheat fields lined the highway and every so often an exit for a small town would pop up but that was about it. It wasn’t until we got a bit closer to Epernay that we finally started to run into huge fields of ...

... de La Bonette, is the highest altitude climb on our itinerary, and the final large climb on our 3200+km cycling itinerary. Fortunately, the weather was good for cycling, the pass was open, the only thing standing in our way was 23km of continuous uphill, with 1590m elevation gain. ... we were there Brett took a tour (in Italian) by the owner and we had lunch (and beer) at the brew pub. On the way back from Piozzo we stopped in another town called Bra. This is the birthplace of the Slow Food movement and there is also a bicycle museum in Bra. We took a nice walk through the town and we also snagged some ...

... Staffarda Abbey, a lovely former monastery and restaurant. Beautiful old building and a very nice vegetarian pasta and ravioli for lunch. Late afternoon was golf at Castellaro Golf Club, about 10 minutes out of town. Saluzzo is very flat, rich orchard and cropping land to the west of Italy, alongside the alps. So there we are playing in sleeveless tops and warm sun looking at beautiful green fields in every direction and snow topped alps beyond. Magic. G&Ts in the ...
