... city, we were able to walk off the ship, and walk into town. The streets of old Genoa are narrow ones that snake up the hillside. This was great, because there wasn’t a lot of vehicular traffic. It just made for tough pictures because the narrow streets were shaded by buildings. There is a lot of gorgeous architecture in Genoa. We really enjoyed just walking around and taking it all in.

... of a wrench on our plans. We had to wait an hour and a half to see "if" the next train would come….otherwise we’d have to wait another 6 hours for the end of the strike at 9pm. Walking was not an option as the walk at this part really was closed (gate, lock and all)….we tried it. So we just did like the Italians and went with the flow. As it turned out, the 3pm did run and were able to get back to our home base for dinner with our friends.

After having a tasty lunch and working most angles of the Quadrilatero we head south to the little fishing village of Santa Margherita, Ligure. This is the place from our honeymoon that I chose to return to. But let's back up for just a moment. Dawn and I both want ...

... 30 minutes as we walked helplessly with our enormous backpacks, dodging under thin awnings and managing to get soaking wet anyway. We might have cared more if it wasn't 100 degrees... the rain actually felt pretty good. Once the rain stopped, we spent some time exploring, and really enjoyed the area. Very touristy, but beautiful views. After ...

    We Loved This Hotel !!!!!!!

    from anonymous

    October 20, 2004

Just returned from a 2 week trip to Italy. (2nd trip) The Hotel Laurin is the gem of the Santa Margherita Coast. The staff, food, room, view, everything was just so great. Venice was ok and so was Florence. The Hotel Laurin made this trip. Special thanks to the very, very, excellent staff. Stay here and you'll see for yourself. Would not stay at any other hotel in Santa Margherita.

Our most sincere thanks to the staff!!!!

    Very noisy!

    from PeterBar

The triple room was small by other 4* hotel standards dominated by huge dark wardrobes which had hangers 10 feet off the ground which needed a pole to retrieve clothes from. All rooms are harbour facing, but all that separates you from the sea is the main road. Even with windows and shutters closed you still hear the noise of cars and mopeds roaring and horns beeping till 4am. Not a hotel for peaceful relaxation. Checked out after 1 night. Santa Margherita is lovely so do go there, but this hotel is well overpriced.

    Wonderful hotel, stay here!!!

    from anonymous

I stayed here for 3 nights in late June 2004. It is a wonderful place! Make sure to request a room with a terrace, being that all rooms are the same price. I did not know this for the first 2 nights, but found out and moved on the last night. The terraces are huge with large sun chairs and a table and chairs. The bathrooms and rooms are huge as well. All rooms overlook the harbor, beautiful view! I am going back there in 2 weeks and can't wait! Also, only a 5 minute drive to cute and charming portofino. The cute posters that the hotel has displayed are sold at the counter for only 3 euro! Nice for a keepsake!

    Extra Special Service

    from 3gigs

The Hotel Laurin deserves special mention because of the courtesy of its staff. We checked in here after a miserable experience at Villa Gnocchi (see review) and found quite a contrast in accommodation, service and friendliness. Room was spacious with a great veranda overlooking the harbor. We parked our car a few blocks away in a public lot, and when we found our tires slashed, the front desk personnel did all they could to help, including summoning the towing service and then preparing a written summary (in Italian, of course) that I could present to the police when I filed a report. Their attitude helped make an unfortunate experience not so bad - we laughed about it then and still do today - and insured that we'd have wonderful, positive memories of Santa Margherita.

    Beautiful position and large rooms

    from anonymous

We stayed in Hotel Laurin in April 2004 and we very pleasantly surprised at how large our room was. WE had a beautiful view over the marina and would have very happily spent our whole holiday sitting on the huge balcony watching the boats. The staff are fantastic and nothing was too much trouble. Their english was great and very knowledgible about the area. Would definitely stay there again and am thinking of having my next big birthday there with 10 friends. The breakfasts are simple but good. WE loved the Laurin.

My girlfriends and I LOVE this hotel...

My girlfriends and I LOVE this hotel...our travel agent said we had to see Santa Margherita and so he set us up at Hotel Laurin. I still dream of the yellow and white awnings and fabulous pool deck...I am going again this summer with my boyfriend--can't wait!

    Great Seaside Hotel!

    from Bayani

The hotel's location just in front of the yacht harbor was perfect. It was far enough from the noise and the crowds yet near enough to be able to walk to the center of town, the train station and the ferry boarding point. Our room, like most of the rooms, had a balcony with chairs and a table where you can just sit, open a bottle of wine, relax and enjoy the view. The room was clean and well-maintained. The front desk staff was very friendly and helpful.

Hotel Laurin - the best of Italy!

    from anonymous

After 3 days in Rome, arriving in Santa Margherita was a wonderful relief from the touristy crowds. We were there the week before Easter and, except for a British cruise ship on our last day, most of the tourists were Italians or other Europeans. The town was beautiful and sedate, the food was fabulous. At the Laurin, they gave us a spacious room with a giant balcony overlooking the harbor and made sure that the adjacent rooms were unoccupied, so it was quiet too.The staff, especially Titsiana, were so helpful and friendly! They bent over backward to make us feel at home - and we did! We would go back in an instant!

Great views at a nice hotel

    from anonymous

On our first trip to Italy, we stayed one night at the Hotel Laurin, on November 30th, 2002. The front desk staff were friendly and helpful. The room was well furnished and clean, with a beautiful view of the harbor. This was enhanced by our waterfront patio, which gave us an expansive view of the bay and surrounding coastline. I expect this to be much noisier during peak tourist season, as the hotel is located right on the main street through town and on to Portofino. One big luxury to me: A real shower, not a scrunch-down-in-the-tub hose with spray head. I guess that shows how spoiled we are in the U.S. The Ristorante San Giacomo, attached to the hotel, was the essence of bland. I am sure there must be better dining possibilities which we would have found if we had stayed longer.
