On our first night, they took us out to fondue and wine, which is their staple here. The cheese fondue was intense - very sharp, but a fun experience and then we devoured a bunch of meat fondue! Also, a lot of people speak ...

Yesterday was Christmas and we had a pretty relaxed day in our apartment. Everything here was closed so we just chilled and made the most of being on holiday. After a restless sleep due to the symphony of bells ...

      Day 281 2 hrs, 10 kms
I continue down a peaceful country path up the valley, past lush grassy fields and little forest groves. One unique thing here are little wooden huts scattered throughout the fields. Not quite sure what they're for--my guess is they are for storing hay or something. Does give the fields a bit of character. Also along the way are little shrine-chapels with ...

      1720. What Makes Austria unique?

... end and now it's time to head uphill and conquer another pass. Like Switzerland, there are hiking trails here as well, to avoid the roads, but not quite as well marked. Soon I reach my next town of Franstanz, with similar architecture and design, with large, chalet like houses--although not as charming and decorative as Swiss houses. I don't want to do this the whole trip: saying "it's kind of like Switzerland, just not as nice..." I've got to find what makes Austria unique and ...
