Ready to go - finally

Day 4 - Avenues and memorials of the former DDR

... campsite south of Spandau, near Kladow. No ballets in sight. It is big, nearly full, and remarkably clean and quiet considering the number of people who must pass through (or live) here. Mr Satnav was trying to get me to drive through a river (I think) so I switched it off and just followed the signs. Easy when you know how. The loo block here is quite the biggest I have ever seen. I think half of Berlin could use it. A two-storey building, there are umpteen toilets ...

Autobahn driving SUCKS!

... s a security gate blocking the exit and the card access is halfway up a ramp. Hmmm? How to stop, get the gate open, then get started again without stalling and falling over? The Universe is awesome. Just as I'm leaving so is someone else. I quickly follow them through the exit with the gate arm just narrowly missing coming down on my head. Yeah! I get to the corner of the building and I get stopped by the Polizie. Talk about bad luck. With only a block to go ...

Spring in Weimar

... the states. (usually 2am to about 5am) However, since they won the championship it really was worth it. The craziest game went into three overtimes and therefore ended at 7am my time…leaving just enough time to shower and go to work. I already feel healthier having some REM time again! Congrats to the Wings, and I hope you all had fun celebrating, I would have loved to be a part of it, but I participated as best I could from afar.

Amsterdam to the Rhine Valley - St Goar, Germany!

... there than in Australia. Flic went and looked at Birkenstocks, but usual scenario for her - her feet are too big! LOL Not happy Jan! Following this, it was another small drive up into the hills of the Rhine Valley, to where there was a small guest house - Winzerhaus Hotel in a very very small village. We were loving it as we again got a room to ourselves in this hotel, so no dormitories as yet! Most of the people on the ...

Decision to stay in Weimar

... pretty much the same price as the bar. I’ve been recently trying different beers all the time…never buying the same beer twice (you’d be amazed how long you can keep that up without repeating here!) Also for those of you that don’t know, they sell beer here by the half liter. I will be very sad to see those tiny little 12oz beers in the states!

Also we’ve had a little shakeup in the ...

Scott Visits Weimar

... Germany and other stuff like people back at Kalamazoo. It really does seem like worlds away. The fact that he is on his way home really shows how imbedded I am here. I have basically no urge to go to the states and I am glad that I get to keep living here! Perhaps I have really become an ex-pat. I even voted via the internet! Of course the issue of whether I need an absentee ballot for November hasn’t been decided yet, but I think you’ll probably ...

Thanksgiving in Germany

... maybe my boring musings will help bring about the triptofan-induced sleep.

It has been an interesting past few days. Weimar was decidedly colder last week, and we got our first snow. It was only a little bit Monday and Tuesday but the flurries were falling all day and it was sticking from time to time. Not that it’s early, but I feel a little bit more connected to the weather living here. I think it is because I ride my bike ...

Touring Weimar with Anne

... was, in fact, wrong. Oops, so I got a bunch of half burnt crunchy cookies…haha. (I still ate them though…)

The next batch was actually pretty good. Aaron and Martin and I sat around eating them. I’m teaching them to like America. They also sort of kidded me about cooking, and told me to bake a pie, specifically an apple pie. So I looked up a recipe online and decided I would attempt that later!

Black Forest sans cake

... or Dutch or French or whatever. I wait to see if she comes out with a smile or a grimace.] The second place she tried was closed in spite of the many signs to the contrary outside. At the third place she could not get an answer to the door. Fourth time lucky, and now several kilometres up in the hills above Baden Baden, we discovered the Aurerhahn in Geroldsau. It was perfect. Your typical Black Forest guest house. A high roofed, timber fame ...
