Sunshine at last!
The duvets and pillows here are of the finest down and you float off to sleep, so we were both well rested. Awoke to glorious sunshine - we could not believe weather could change so dramatically
The breakfast buffet was amazing but, stuck to fruit etc. Mick didn't.
At 10.30 Claudia turned up with our rickshaw which is essentially a double …
Raindrops on Roses and everything else!!!!
Mick found out about Leicester missing a penealy & then Watford scoring, so was not a happy bunny!
Went to a Bier Keller last night and had something totally unpronouncable which turned out to be pork & onions with roast potatoes. It was delicious. We resisted the pickled pigs head, liver dumplings and stuffed cabbage though. . The …
Salzburg, Can we stay?
We are offically in love with Austria.
We arrived in Salzburg and we were starving, so we decided to stop at an Austrian Burger King which was an interesting experience. They have some of the same things, but most things were a bit different. We then caught a taxi from the train station to our hotel, the amazing Hotel Elefant in Salzburg …
Salzburg
Left Montreux at 7:30am and arrived in rainy Salzburg at 4:00pm....8.5hrs without as much as a single cloud break. Will go out walking in the rain tonight. Tomorrow we have a car booked to drive out to Berchtesgaden, where Adolf Hitler's "Eagle's Nest" is located. It is supposed to have a spectacular view, unless it is cloudy and raining...which it …
Fraueninsel and Family
... translated means men's island and a very small island which people jokingly call the baby island. The snow was falling as we explored the little huts filled with wooden toys and christmas ornaments and they even built a smaller wooden replica of the thousand year old church that is located on the island. After we went for dinner at the nice restaurant called the Linde which was where I had been a few years earlier for Mary's and Joerg's wedding. ...

Historical Traveler Reviews Best Western Hotel Elefant Salzburg
Great location, atmosphere and service!
We have just returned from a 2 night stay at the Hotel Elefant in Salzburg.
The hotel is located in the alstadt (old town) pedestrian area of Salzburg so it is very quiet but right in the center of all the activity and sights. We were traveling with our 2 children so we had a large double room with a sofa sleeper for the kids. Breakfast was wonderful and we had one dinner at the hotel which was excellent. We sat at the outside tables which is so fun!
We really enjoyed staying at this hotel. The atmosphere & furnishings are "old world" but there is a living area which has tv and internet access if you chose to be a part of the modern world!! The air conditioning worked very well as we needed a/c in July! Our bathroom was quite large and nice.
The front desk was very helpful with questions & set up an evening concert at the fortress for us. The hotel parked our car for us in the garage.
A very good choice for our family. We would stay at the Hotel Elefant again when visiting Salzburg!!
Location location location
We stayed just after New Year 2005 and believe you just can't beat a location in the middle of the Old Town in a pretty quiet street just down from the Rathaus. All of the staff were friendly -- a couple of them went out of their way to suggest ideas or look after us at breakfast. The 2 rooms we had were clean and comfortable and larger than we thought for an Old Town hotel. One had a great view and the other not -- remember to ask for one if that makes a difference -- it did to us.
It was a comfortable place to stay and unless you're looking for a luxury 5 star chateau, this is well worth a look. We'd go back again!
Perfect location
Our first time in Salzburg we were pleasantly surprised by the location of the hotel, which was perfect. 2 minute walk to the Christmas market and directly off of a very charming street/shopping area. The staff were very pleasant and helpful.
Our room was very small, but bed and linen were comfortable and clean.
I feel the hotel is above average for a 3 star, but the price definately reflects a 4-5 star.
I would definatley recommend the hotel's restaurant which was excellent and convenient, although closed on Tuesdays.
I would recommend this hotel, but next visit we will probably try another hotel.
Always a good experience at the Elefant
I've stayed at the Elefant twice, and have recommended it to friends without reservation. Both times I stayed, the room was charming, clean and comfortable. The concierge scored concert tickets for us, which gave us the best seats in the house. The location is fantastic, being within walking distance of everthing we wanted to see in Salzburg, and is on a cobbled street full of charm. The breakfast was bountiful and delicious. Yes, the lobby is small, but I don't hang out in hotel lobbies. There are lots of nooks and crannies at the Elefant for a quiet read, etc. We stayed in summer, and the airconditioning worked a treat.
Loved the elefant
What can i say ! Have now stayed at the elefant 3 times. The rooms are full of charm and spotless. The staff are beyond reproach and will do anything to help . The owners always make time to talk to you and are very friendly. The food in the resturant is 100% fresh , natural ,austrian and fantastic .... breakfast was always a treat. On my very first visit there we were delayed by adout 3 hours.... arrived at about 11:00 p.m. and they had kept the resturant open for us ... what service !!!!
Will not use any other hotel.
Great location, nice room; some service lapses
We were booked here by our travel agent who loves this hotel. The location cannot be beat--right smack in town. The front office staff were cordial, and the room itself was charming EXCEPT that when we arrived the room had not been made up from previous occupants--dirty linen, no towels, etc. We asked respectfully that it be remedied and went out for quite a while--but no luck, as apparently the housekeeping staff had departed. That evening we persuaded the evening manager to locate clean linens for us and we changed the bedding, towels etc. Seems a small matter but the price is definitely high for self-catering!
There are other better choices
We stayed 3 days in the Elephant over Christmas with 2 elementary school aged children. This was my 5th visit to Salzburg so I am somewhat of a veteran. We stayed at the Elephant for the first timedue to location and the family suite. Upon arrival I, too, agree with the previous respondent in that decor for the lobby was very much office like and totally lacked charm and elegance deserving of such a lovely city. Our accomodations were a huge disappointment. For 350 Euro a night for the penthouse suite we found it dirty, hodge podge decor, stained couches, a mini kitchen w/ cooktop, oven and refrigerator that contained no cooking OR eating utensils. Furthermore, the room service was minimal, no fresh bars of soap (reused old ones that were only face sized not bath sized) and no shampoo like most Best Westerns provide.
The breakfast was lovely and the Christmas Eve dinner was quite nice but that was about it. The restaurant at this hotel was closed 2 days out of our stay of 3 so some future planned was needed which I was aware of before departing. I think for the terrible price we paid for the penthouse suite we were certainly taken advantage of. When I brought this up upon checkout I was told, "I"ll make the manager aware of it." I would have prefered to stay at the Weiss Taube. Next time I will or if you care to drive 20 mins I love the Jagdoff (also Best Western but more like a Best Western). Location can't be everything.
Elefant could have more character
I have to admit that I was slightly disappointed with the Elefant. Its central location cannot be beaten, the staff are extremely friendly and our room was quite nice - even though our 'view' was a blank wall less than two feet away. However I'd hoped the hotel would have had more character than it did. The lobby is very sterile - it could be in any office block. The hotel is not cheap and yet I've stayed in hotels which cost less but felt more luxurious.
Loved the Elefant!
Can't beat the location of this hotel and because it's located in the heart of the old city it's quiet! The rooms are charming; the bathrooms small but extremely well equiped--we were told the hotel underwent renovation a year ago and the bathrooms reflect this. Couldn't get over the generous breakfast served each morning--included in the price.
Would stay here again--we were sad to leave.
It Can't Get Any Better Than This
This is the ultimate Salzburg Hotel. Our room was charming, with down pillows and duvets. The street the hotel is on evokes a sense of history. The staff are helpful and friendly. The concierage will do anything from booking reservations, providing umbrellas or offering temporary eyeglasses to make your stay perfect. If you're driving, parking is provided at a significantly discounted rate. The food at lunch and dinner is outstanding and breakfast is enough to make you want to wake up. Location is perfect.
