On the 1st January, we left Italy for the French country side. It was our longest drive of about 500km. The scenery was beautiful with snow covered fields and small towns. We drove through the Mont Blanc tunnel which is 12km long through the mountains. We arrived late in the afternoon with the two satellite navigation systems taking us different routes - one along a rode and the other on a mud track. We are staying in my sisters and brother-in-laws house in the small town ...

great and the little bar opposite the hotel filled the rest of the evening, getting us in the holiday mood nicely.

So I hit the road solo this afternoon, making my way over the next 2 days to Venice. It feels strange being without the wife and saying goodbye was a teary affair for both of us although, we are only apart for 2 weeks. I arrived in Bourg-en Bresse without any problems. I actually wished I was more aggressive in my driving plan because I'm sure I could have made it to Geneva quite easily.

There isn't anything here so its quite boring. The hotel I'm staying at is ...

... English accent and several of us were conversing with the proprietor in French. I will explain this route a bit better tomorrow - my maps are still on my bike.

We met Caroline for lunch in the town of Givry - she had picked up groceries and we had a nice picnic. We then discovered that there was a paved cycling path that extended south to Mācon for 65 km. Despite the fact that this was taking us further west than we wanted to be, we decided ...
