      A bit confused in Switzerland

Our home this week is just outside of the city centre of Lugano only about 30 minutes drive from Lake Como. Switzerland was a little confusing to begin with, they are not part of the EU, they have their own currency, they have their own power plugs, everyone here speaks Italian, and if they don't speak that, they speak German, and if they don't speak that they speak some other lingo, but fortunately they seem to have a reasonably handle on English too. It is also ...

Day 274 1 hr, 1 km With the steep, wooded mountainside to my left and a valley that is quickly narrowing to my right it's only a few hundred meters and I'm in the next town, Messe. I know that the uphill climb is getting close, including my big goal: to cross the Splugenpass from Italy to Switzerland on foot. I know it was just planted here for the warm months, but seeing a banana tree in someone's yard just feels really unappropriate. C'mon folks, this is the ...

Day 274 3 hrs, 3 kms In the morning I go to check out the waterfall again. Not a very big waterfall--but a nice way to start out my morning. On the rocky shore of the river a group of young folks are camping out. Nice to see a few other folks enjoying the pleasure of sleeping out of doors (although admittedly my real motive is stinginess--not a love for sleeping under the stars!) It sound like there's a much higher waterfall up a bend in a slit like gorge--but I ...

... untarnished" mountain regions... not a lot of jobs... so people spend much of their lives elsewhere working... Finally I reach a point where the valley narrows. Up on a hilltop is another town--but a sign says there's a waterfall off to the side. I figure, no harm in taking a detour to see a waterfall. But by the time I get there it's too dark to really enjoy it, so I decide to just camp out here and continue on tomorrow. It's been a very full ...

Day 273 2 hrs, 8 kms Novate Mezolla is on the far side of the lake. Here there are quite a few vacationers enjoying the last days of summer on the lake. Take another video clip along with a quick tour of the town. Next is another fertile valley, perfectly flat on the bottom but with abrupt, steep walls. Unlike the Valtellina and Camonica valleys, there's no ...
