My previous blog was late in getting posted as I couldn't access the wi-fi at the hostel. I had planned in staying at a hostel nearby but there was no room at the Inn, so to speak, when I tried to book. Trying to find a place to stay using a hostel website when you don't know where the towns are in a country is very time consuming. It is also the weekend and Germans seem to like to go to the coast at this time. The Autobahn showed it. So I did the quickest thing to find accomodations in the g...

... days that had been around, the day we went to Hamburg was beautiful! Nice sunny weather and the temperature was bareable unlike the other days, so much so that I felt hot in my jacket!! So we looked around the port of Hamburg, and I saw the old building that used to be the hospital Nanny worked at many many years ago, etc. We also went to this (now museum type thing) of an old typical Hamburg house from way back. It was tiny! And the stairs to get upstairs were ...
Lübeck, Schleswig-Holstein, Germany ilovetheworld... out, it was shallow enough that people were walking ankle-deep in water (like when our lake at the cottage was low that one year) but yet, just a short distance beyond that was a channel that was deep enough for big barges, etc. and we saw a cruise ship passing by.
And, of course, the main attraction was the submarine. It was right on shore and you could walk through it. (Okay I know nothing about submarines, Pete ...
... the usual Stuttgart and Aachen was a good show with Stuttgart coming out on top once again. On Sunday we had a bit of free time in the morning due to a late game start and a few of us drove around and found the beach with some nice views of the Baltic Sea.
All in all, we didn't win so many of the games and finished 14th, a bit below what we were seeded. Maybe next weekend will fare better....

... Then one of the older gentlemen came in and he was from Copenhagen and so we chatted about Denmark. I learned a lot about other cultures and countries during this stay. It was quite informative. This morning the weather sucked. It was dull and dreary and a light mist fell all morning. With my sore back, which seemed to be getting worse, it was an awful travelling day. The older gentleman from Copenhagen had suggested I visit the west ...
Heide, Schleswig-Holstein, Germany cobra1899... town. The coast here is very pleasant, rolling downland dropping to flat sandy beaches backed by dunes. Out of town the beaches are accessible and often have large car parks with the inevitable wurst seller. We stopped at one where the stall specialised in home smoked fish. How Lesley would have loved to take some home for dinner, but we agreed that the smell in the caravan would be a bit ...
Bad Segeberg, Germany oldagetraveller... and wishing (as usual) that we could have stayed longer. Mike: Again it was lovely being greeted by friends at the train station. We had seen photos of their home when they stayed with us, but as usual photos just didn't do it justice. They all lived right on a most beautiful lake, with a big lush garden, in a big old 3storey house sooo different to the ultra-modern Berlin one we had just left behind! Gee we have ...
Plön, Germany chalmersfamilyI woke up early again today, and caught a train to Lübeck, which isn't too far from Hamburg, and has a ton of spas, beauty salons, and restaurants. But I didn't go for any of these, I went for the museums. Specifically, I went to the Günter-Grass-House, a visual arts museum. I have no idea who this Grass person was, but the museum puts his work in art, literature, and music on display. I ...
Lübeck, Germany jasminemThe Kiel Canal links the North Sea with the Baltic Sea. It starts from the River Elbe and reaches the Baltic near the port of Kiel about 60 miles. The canal was only about 300 feet wide and only 37 feet deep and is spanned by 7 high bridges. The transit time was about 8 hours as we were going slow.
