      Last stop for the day was Port Hudson. The Siege of Port Hudson, Louisiana (22 May - 9 July 1863), was the final engagement in the Union campaign to liberate the Mississippi in the American Civil War.

      We started out the day in Franklinton in Washington Parish. The whole town shut down for the opening of the Washington Parish Free Fair, with a big parade. We had front row seats and savored some coffee as the morning was cool.

      Greg and I left the Lafayette area today and travelled towards New Orleans. It's only a two hour drive but what a drive. The highway from Lafayette to Baton Rouge (about 100 km) was on an elevated road built on pilings in the Atchafalaya swamp. It’s quite the engineering feat.
