Champagne...could this be my spiritual home?

Felicity and I arrived in Reims yesterday lunchtime after a relaxing Eurostar trip from London via Paris, managed to find our "surprisingly fancy" Best Western and wandered to Veuve Cliquot for our 2pm appointment. Oh it was lovely being at veuve's house, as you would expect everything was …

... a car to get it working. All this while Rae was flying in to meet us in Reims. No chance. So we stopped in sillery and waited for her there. The marina is closed of course. been closed since the 1st of october. Tonight after tea. We are in the cockpit with craig on the didge and Rae on the Uke and the harmonica and singing away. I Know I am vicariously enjoying the sounds of home made music as I am not playing. But I love it. red ...

Well i say repaired but after looking at the thicknesses of metal i think welding will only be a temporary fix and will worry me later. dee somehow managed to get an exploded veiw of the plate from vetus so I could get the part number. its part number being ...

We were in a lock at the time so towed it out on foot and started phing around. i went to the lock keeps cottage and the woman there phoned the mechanics which it turns out is the one we tried to get work done in vitrie la francoise. Its monday so he is closed. They have very long weekends here. i figured we are ...

Historical Traveler Reviews BEST WESTERN Hotel de la Paix Reims

    A split personality hotel

    from anonymous

Just got back from a weekend away in Reims, we stayed at this hotel for one night. Reading back over the reviews I can see why some of them contrast so dramatically. The lobby to the hotel has been recently renovated and its very contempory and stylish... unfortunately this can't be said for all of the hotel - if you book a cheaper room you end up going left from the reception in to what could be a completely different hotel - dark, drab, carpets wearing through, old rickety lift and not that inspiring bedroom - more 70's travel inn than 3 star hotel.

We complained and asked to be upgraded to the obviously recently redone other side of the hotel and after a little price negotiation we were given a fantastic room - probably one of the best we've stayed in. Huge room with large window looking out over Reims, flat screen TV, large bed and a huge impressive bathroom with a fantastic bath and walk in shower.

We didn't sample the restaurant but we did have cocktail at the bar after dinner out - great atmosphere and very cool seats!

I've rated the hotel as above average, although the new side was excellent - my advice go there but don't book the cheap rooms!!

oh and ring in advance and book a parking space - you can park over the road for €4 less but the hassle isn't worth it :-)

Excellent hotel, centrally located, highly reccommended

    from anonymous

We stayed at the hotel in August 2005. The hotel is super modern and it was clear that it had just been fully refurbished. It has an excellent location in the centre of Reims near to lots of good restaurants. It has its own very secure car park for an extra 10 Euros. We booked it after collecting a hotel guide from the tourist information. We paid 130 Euros for a double room. We now know we could have paid half that much had we booked online in advance! At 75 Euros its really excellent value. We had a standard room which was more than adequate. It was not particularly large -I'd describe it as 'compact'. However there was sufficient space for the travel cot they were able to provide for our baby. The decor was very, very modern-and not to everyones taste. We also had a very small balcony. Watch out for the shower. It is at floor level with no basin and ours managed to overflow almost flooding the bedroom carpet. Breakfast was extra, 11 Euros, and was a combination of cooked (bacon, eggs) and continenetal with cereal fruit and yoghurt.

    Nice, shiny and new

    from siypux

I stayed in this hotel in late May 05. All the building work was over and the place was really shiny and new. They have created a really different hotel, not to everyone's taste I should imagine, but the rooms we had were fabulous and the bar and relaxing areas downstairs were really good.

I visited this hotel before, in Nov 04, probably just as they started the re-fit and thought the same as others - building site! But I can report that they've sorted it all out.

The new rooms are smart, beds are good, bathrooms are beautiful (sliding doors might not be to every couple's taste!), and everything is new.

I'd recommend it to others now.

Dirty, crowded, snobby, and under construction

    from anonymous

This was our second stay at Hotel De La Paix, and our last. The hotel is being renovated with a new street presence. We were relegated to one of the wings that had not been updated and it was very poor. The bed was terrible and the level of cleanliness did not inspire confidence. I am still itching after sleeping there. The staff were not very helpful, you had to really pull answers to each question from them. Yes the location is good, but there are lots of hotels in the same area. Le Continental looks good!

    Location, location, location

    from NR16

Had a three night stay at the end of April, driving from UK. Yes, the place was still being decorated but not to our inconvenience. Our room looked over a typical French roofscape and you could see the top of the cathedral. We could hear its bells, pleasantly and not obtrusively. The hotel's a bit impersonal but the staff were were helpful, spoke excellent English and the service was more than adequate.

But it is the location that made the hotel for us. It's in walking distance of almost everything you want to see in Reims. The shops, the stunning cathedral and other public buildings are a stroll away. Best of all are the almost pedestrianised streets with wall to wall restaurants and bars. We normally avoid hotel restaurants so chose La Taverna de Maitre Kanter around the corner to find later that there is a door straight into the hotel. (Now we see its picture on the hotel's website). Excellent buzz in the restaurant with good food and friendly staff. You are in Reims; start the meal with a glass of champagne as an 'aperitif', poured at the table from a magnum of Jacquart. The other bonus of the hotel is its secure car park. We went off season but it may be advisable to book a space otherwise. The entrance is just before the hotel facade where there is an unpromising roller door: park outside and shout into the intercom to be let in. The underground park looked as if it had been newly wired and painted, gleaming like an operating theatre. Otherwise there is a multi-storey almost opposite and the hotel will endorse your ticket to get a discount on the charges.

The hotel reception will give you a free map of Reims, sponsored by the champagne houses. We walked (25 minutes) to Piper Heidseck and enjoyed the tour and tasting. Don't buy the champagne in their shop because it's cheaper in the supermarket.

    Very disappointing

    from anonymous

Despite its proximity to the centre of Reims, we were extremely disappointed with this hotel. Perhaps we were particularly unlucky however, we found our double room to be small, dark and generally uninviting. In addition, after check-in at the newly completed reception area, we discovered that the rest of the hotel appeared to be still undergoing refurbishment with a lot of building clutter (old furniture and furnishings) visibly scattered around on the first floor common area. This is in contrast to the hotel's own website which indicated the hotel was under renovation until September 2004. We found the hotel itself to be lacking in any atmosphere or character and (having paid EUR 99 for the night) overpriced.

    A Nice Surprise!

    from TravelSuitsMe

After spending 4 nights in a Luxury Hotel in Paris, 2 friends and I hoped a train and headed for Reims. We rented a car and approached the Hotel de la Paix (Paix means Peace in French).

Prior to arriving, we obtained a great rate at this hotel and because there were three of us traveling together we needed a room that would accomodate 3 separate beds. They had one, and it was quite large.

The concierge, Christopher, was more than accomodating. I can't say enough about him and the other staff at the "front desk."

The hotel has parking, although limited, below the building. Please advise Best Western prior to arrival that you will need a parking space so they can reserve one for you. There is a nominal fee to park at the hotel.

There is a restaurant attached to the hotel which serves great food - more Alsace type cuisine. The servings are large so you may want to consider sharing. Good atmosphere.

The hotel is within walking distance to the Notre Dame Cathedral. I've been to Paris more than once and attended mass at Notre Dame in Paris each time. The Cathedral in Reims, in my opinion, is much more breath-taking! Please allow adequate time to "take it in."

This hotel is also within a wonderful driving distance to the Champagne houses in Epernay and, of course, the ones in Reims. Within 25 minutes (max) you can drive to Moet Chandon and participate in a great tour. Also, within only a few minutes, you can be at the "houses" in Reims.

The hotel staff can make arrangements for special tours without you having to board a tour bus. You can go at your own pace.

I would return to this hotel upon going to Reims in the future.

    Great location

    from Blackcat5573

Nice comfortable room and ideally located as it's right in the centre of Reims.

Couldn't get in the hotel carpark but there's a multi-storey across the road which the hotel gives a discount for using.

    Would definately stay here again.

    Great Location

    from anonymous

I have stayed at this hotel on 4 occasions and have been impressed each time. Rooms are large especially if you opt for the family ones, which have great bathrooms. It is right in the centre of Reims and has it's own underground car park. The restaurent attached to the hotel is fine and reasonably priced. Continental buffet breakfast is also OK.

    Great location

    from anonymous

The hotel is right in the centre of Reims and very convenient. The rooms were larger than average and comfortable. The breakfast room was a little gloomy but is a great seafood restaurant in the evening. We were there in February and very disapointed all the champagne houses were closed, both in town and in the countryside. I would recommend this hotel as value for money.
