First of two trips to Waitomo, and this first one was to go on a caving tour down in Ruakuri caves. When I arrived I was told to walk 10 minutes down the road to get to where I needed to be. Waitomo seems really out of the way, not many people and not much going on...not above ground anyway. I walked along the road for 10 minutes seeing nothing but farmland stretching ahead, ...

... left! 20 minutes of this road making our way slowly but surely up hill, an according to the van using about 1/3rd of a tank of fuel, we made it! Up to the top of the road to where the DOC information place was with all the walking tracks around the area, but we wanted to just get along to the falls, back down the road for 2 minutes and then the falls were only a few minutes off from the road, we sort of parked/ dumped the van and made our way down! A month ago I went to visit another Canadian gappie at her placement. I took the bus for 5.5 hours to ...

The Maori brought us to Ngaruawahia to the most sacred Marae for the maori. This is the official place and the hearth where the current Maori queen lives.

When we arrived to the Marae we were greeted with "Kiaora" meaning Hello and a Hongi, which is a Maori greeting of placing your nose and ...

Day 8 - An unexpected journey

... we had the set all to ourselves!

We began the tour with Sam (not Samwise Unfortunatetly) who led us down into the spectacular movie set. As soon as we walked through a stone-lined path, we were in the Shire. There were two Hobbit holes right in front of us with the garden patch Bilbo runs through in the Hobbit!
