Exploring the Acropolis

... of water, used to stand a 40 foot gold and ivory statue until it was destroyed. All the carvings on the building depict battles or events with the mythological gods. It was really a cool sight and it looks huge. You can see all of Athens stretching out on all sides and the sea in the distance. Way awesome. Other temples were also next to the Parthenon like the Erechtheion, complete in 406 BC. One of the sides is supported by six stone women, the Caryatids.<br ...

The International Language of Electricians

... oil, so I couldn't afford any of that at the moment. I stopped at Red Door and got a chicken gyro on the way back home. The woman behind the counter was very patient: when I asked for chicken, she quietly corrected my Greek pronunciation. So I walked around saying "chicken, chicken, chicken" to practice, and the girl at the register thought that was very funny. At the door of my apartment, I ran into an older woman who lives there, who ...

This Train, Beach Glyfada?

... flowers, clothes, shoes, rugs, pillows, and tablecloths. The food is amazingly fresh and only what's in season. I bought some toothsome figs, grapes, oranges, bananas, and eggs. They don't refrigerate their eggs around here, not even in the big supermarkets. Hrm. Well, if there were masses of people dying of salmonella, I guess we would've been warned about it. My plan is to hard boil the eggs for little lunches, so I'll be ok anyway. I used my pathetic Greek at the market. The egg ...

Super Yacht Time

... the following day, then Maree and Paul the day after! Friday finally arrives so we head into city centre, which was a very cool place. Very clean, great shops and easy to get around. We staked out Gordon and Bronnies hotel then took off for a couple of hours window shopping. We then headed back to the hotel and there they were at the reception just checking in! Lots of hugs, tears and laughter later we had there gear in the room and we were off the Acropolis. The ...

The City on the Hill

A few minutes before 8 am and I'm among a small handful of people waiting to buy a ticket to mount the Acropolis. It's still reasonable cool, though only in the shade. The gate swings wide and our small herd plods north and up, winding our way through olive groves and stunted pine. In a few minutes, I'm approaching the Theater of Dionysus and am looking forward to seeing some hot, all-Greek action. But, the place is disappointingly empty and it looks like it's been ...

That's Greece

... turned her back in her chair. Service. When we spoke with other friendly local passengers on the morning train, none were surprised at our experience. None. "Thats Greece," was the uniform sad response. "At least you get to leave and don't have to live with it," was its common partner. Astounding. And doubly so having come from Iran where people would have fought for the honour to drive you the seven hours to Athens had any delay in the train service occurred ...

Athens, Day 3 and 4

... But it makes me sad, because then i think of Guitar Hero...(i think i may have an addiction...) After that, we decided to head to the Flea Market again, as Erin wanted to find the Starbucks we saw while on our walking tour, but we couldnt find it, and we even saw our tour guide, Jeff, after we had our coffee from COFFEE RIGHT. And he told us that it was down a street that we were definately already on. Thats the bad thing about Europe i find. Once you ...

... Forum, the Colosseum, Trevi Fountain, the Pantheon, Piazza Navona, Campo De Fiori, the Spanish Steps, Piazza Venezia and many more fountains and sites throughout the city. I also managed to meet up with some old friends from my tour-guiding days, which brought back some great memories. From Rome we took a short 2-hour train ride to Florence. Although I had been to Florence once before, it was a very brief tour, so I was excited to see ...

The beginning and end of it all

... and exquisite detail on a grand scale. Recognizing that the human eye is wont to play tricks on us when viewing perfectly straight objects, the architects who built the Parthenon varied the length of the columns and ceilings by slight but symmetrical degrees to ensure that when viewed from the ground the building would look perfect. It does (again, minus some detritus, largely created by an unfortunate placement of gunpowder by invading Turks in the seventeenth century ...

Glyfada and the Greek Orthodox visit

... the word that you would use, our hair and talking to us. We had no idea what they were saying to us, but they seemed nice enough. It was definitely an interesting experience. After that church service we took a bus and the metro into Athens for our worship time. This morning was the mixed worship service at 11:30. There were 4 different languages-English, Bulgarian, Russian and Greek. I have to admit that I don't really remember too much about the lesson, with all the ...
