... but a paragraph here and a paragraph there in other books she was surprised. As she learned more and more about the area Val would relate the stories to campers who also seemed interested in knowing more. So she decided to write a book about Savage Camp, Savage Campground, and the Savage River area. To make a long story short that is how we ended up back in Fairbanks for a few days. Val is doing research at the archives of the University of Alaska Fairbanks. She has also ...
Fairbanks, Alaska, United States vwinans... who built the town of Fairbanks on the banks of the Chena River in the very heart of the vast Alaskan wilderness. Even though the cast was polished and professional, we found the music and skits to be trite and, sad to say, boring. We couldn't wait until the show ended.
We boarded the bus, provided by our campground, to return to Riverview RV Park, and even though many of us in the back of the bus chanted "DQ, DQ, DQ," the driver ignored us.
... We stopped at a meat processing place at Delta Junction. We sampled buffalo, reindeer, yak and elk. We got buffalo burger and had it for dinner. Yummy! We may stay in Fairbanks for a week and take day trips. We found a city campground that has everything we need, including internet. It got up to 84 deg today. Message from Evelyn: We are still healthy, walking and site seeing. Love to all my family. Message from Fred: All 8 wheels ...
Fairbanks, Alaska, United States bwmuzikHere we are, home again, all safe and sound! All of our flights were on schedule except our final one from Anchorage to Fairbanks. It was delayed for about one-hour due to weather and mechanical problems. We were finally placed onto a different flight, and soon discovered that we were riding on the bright blue Disney plane. The 45-minute flight was quite a bumpy ride due to the wind and turbulance. We flew up from our seats a couple of times (thank ...
Fairbanks, Alaska, United States alaskateamAnother rainy day for our Gold Mine Excursion. We decided to go anyway hoping the weather would clear a litlle bit. We arrived at the El-Dorado Gold Mine around 930am. The mine was on the other side of town past the Alaska Pipeline visitor area. We decided to wait until after our tour to stop at the pipeline thinking maybe it would stop raining by then. The El Dorado Gold Mine tour was fun ...
Fairbanks, Alaska, United States margiewilson... it! We went to a few shops with a few of the typical Alaska souvenirs - but nothing exciting. Our store of choice was this outdoors store that sold a lot of work clothes. I did end up buying a few shirts in preparation for next year's trip to India - so check back next summer as that will be an interesting trip. Pooh picked out some stuff but resisted the call to buy. Next, we found a small Vietnamese food stand outside with just a few tables. It was run by ...
Fairbanks, Alaska, United States scoonpooh... we told them the address's of all the great kids we know back home in Australia. Santa even mentioned he sometimes uses his six white boomers to help him in our country. We lunched at Santa's house outside in our Castle and then headed off towards Tok. (Interesting how it has received this name, It was once called Tokyo Junction, but after the advent of the 2nd world war the locals felt it best to shorten the name to ...
North Pole, Alaska, United States popusa2008... headed for Frontside B&B, a small B&B / hostel with plenty of "character". The hostel was run by a chap called Steve, a 50ish year old bachelor complete with white wife beater, cut off shorts and hiking boots. He was a friendly guy but on first impressions was a little odd with an impressive squint. He was also completely shocked that people may actually want to stay in his B&B. (Poppy: In our usual fashion we had selected it from a tourist guide ...
Fairbanks, Alaska, United States timdabunny... The weather is also iffy at this time of year with snow not unexpected from the Brooks Range on north. There is a danger of flash floods and running water may wash out the culverts and bridges. The highway is apparently nowherer near the excellent standard of the Liard Highway. There are an abundance of potholes, washboard, sharp rocks and depending on the weather, clouds of dust or slick conditions. Rental car companies prohibit the use of ...
Fairbanks, Alaska, United States lobo... prepared a meal of egg noodles and Italian Sausage pasta sauce that hadn't yet gone moldy in the fridge. She called in the final stages of the preparation and we talked on the phone. * The phone's a difficult part. I want to talk to you, to hear what you've got going on, but the phone conversations can be awkward. There's the constant pressure that the conversation has to end. It is a phone call after all, and all phone calls end with hanging up. Even the first phone call ...
