... wind, to the Argentine lake, the largest in Argentina and one of the largest in South America. We discovered that the portion of lake attached to Calafate is not particularly accessible and didn't share the same amazing aqua-marine colour that other sections of the lake possess. Nevermind - there were some flamingos on the lake although we weren't able to get that close to them either. The town's setting is amazing, mountains on every side. Quite a harsh but beautiful landscape ...

Essa cidade de 300 habitantes fica mais ao Norte, dentro do Parque Nacioal Los Glaciares. El Chalten eh ...
El Calafate, Patagonia, Argentina andre_c10002... annoying but hay what can you do, so we snuggled up into our seats and shut our eyes. After about half an hour they said we could wait inside the immigration building as it was warmer and there was a toilet. Finally at about 10am we loaded back on to the bus thinking we were off, not quite. Someone translated that we had two options, one - take a different route around which would not get us to El Calafate until 11pm or we could turn around and head back to Puerto ...
El Calafate, Patagonia, Argentina dlz... with three other girls from NYU. They were nice, but I did not stay there too long. My next night in Calafate I stayed with a girl from france, doing an internship in Buenos Aires and a couple from Romania. I requested an all female dorm , but I everyone is very laid back in America del Sur and didnt seem to care. It was tough sharing a small hostel with three other ppl . The mann from Romania was snoring all night, and anyone who really knows me ...
El Calafate, Argentina perezc4... lodge, so that I would be recovered to hike up to the Torres the following morning. In one of those twilight zone moments, the day earlier Mary said that I looked like MC Hammer with my hiking pants blowing in the wind; at night in the lodge, we heard 2 Legit 2 Quit on the house stereo. The Chileans, just like the Argentines, love their 80s and 90s hits. Nav, you must come to this part of the world! Day 5: Perfect Day for an ...
El Calafate, Argentina chiapoe... it. Next we boarded a boat to cross the lake followed by an hours trek through the woods alongside the glacier, before donning our crampons ready to hit the ice! The glacier was beautiful, even under the grey skies that we were unfortunate to have that day, and brought a new meaning to the word ‘ice blue’. A huge valley of undulating ice carving its way between the mountains. There were areas where the glacier was thinning creating blue ...
El Calafate, Santa Cruz, Argentina tom_monique... that it´s still active, constantly advancing at up to 2m per day and shedding huge ice bergs from it´s face. A peninsular of land on the opposite side of the lake allowed us to get to within about 200m of the big blue face (which can look a bit like Planet Krypton if you squint your eyes). Here we were able to watch and wait for the next car sized piece of ice to crash to the water followed by a thunderous ...
El Calafate, Patagonia, Argentina samandchantal... Canadians asked. "Yeah." "So are we! Don't forget to eat all your produce before you cross the border to Chile. Evan left a mango on the bus going into Argentina and it was one of the scariest moments of our trip for her." Canadians love to tell border stories. "****. Lindsey, we have to eat ALL the groceries you bought TOMORROW!" Ben acknowledged. Border crossing with fresh produce and animal products-a slight oversight. Getting on the bus the next morning, we ...
El Calafate, Patagonia, Argentina benandlindsey... not worry about doing this, sadly I didn't listen and gave the guy in the shop the memory card from the camera. 10 minutes later and after much pressing of buttons and bemused looks, we have a memory card without 446 pictures!!! A rather scared looking assistant ( a good foot shorter than me, so a time where my boxing training could have worked), handed me back the card, told me to "relax, be cool" (famous last ...
El Calafate, Patagonia, Argentina loumark... long and it is around 70 metres high above the water level. What makes it unique, apart from ease of access and the scale of it, is that it is actually stable (not receding). In fact it moves at about 2 metres a day and so is constantly making rumbles and loud bangs and dropping great wedges of ice off the front. ... ... Magic stuff!
