Suspension Bridges and Granville Island

One of Vancouver's most well-known and oldest tourist attractions is the Capilano Suspension Bridge. Some people had warned us that this bridge was a bit of a tourist trap (cost of admission is $20-something). So, we thought we would venture out to the other suspension bridge in Lynn Canyon Park, which was free. The weather forecasted rain today. Not exactly ideal weather for stomping around outdoors or on a bouncy bridge. But we stuck by our plan. We arrived early and there was hardly anybod...

Back to Vancouver

It was another early morning for us. We had to wake up early and drive back to Anchorage in order to catch our 2:00pm flight back to Vancouver. The drive away from Denali National Park was not as pleasant as our drive towards it. The weather was not as clear plus we were leaving the mountains. :( In any case, we arrived at the airport in time to return our rental car. We relaxed at the airport until our flight departed. We arrived in Vancouver safe and sound. Plus, having stayed in Richmond b...

Bev's wedding

Today was Bev and Taka's wedding day. It began with a morning outdoor ceremony at the London Heritage Farms. I was honoured to read a poem as part of the ceremony. After the ceremony, snacks were served and there was a photography session. It was great to see my family again. After the photography session, the bridal party went off to do their own photos while a group of my cousins went to a Chinese restaurant for dim sum lunch (as if we didn't get enough to eat at the Richmond Night Market l...

Second Trip to Richmond Night Market

Today was our last day in Vancouver. We checked out of our hotel and headed to my aunt's (Bev's mom) house for lunch. Most of my family would be there. Plus, the bride and groom were slated to arrive and open up their wedding gifts. Man, I have one big and loud family similar to the movie, My Big Fat Greek Wedding. It was lots of fun though. It was great catching up with the Vancouver gang, who I do not see often in addition to some of the Toronto gang and my American cousins. After hanging o...

Mall-Hopping and the Vancouver Aquarium

Today, Colin and I wanted to explore more of the Golden Village. Our first stop was a T&T Supermarket. For those of you who are unfamiliar with T&T, it can best be described as an Asian Loblaws. There are several huge locations in the Greater Toronto Area but we wanted to visit the original location, which was in Richmond (by the Radisson hotel). Colin and I love going to T&T to enjoy samples of food and oogle at the fresh seafood, produce and pastries. To our disappointment, the ...

Historical Traveler Reviews of Best Western Downtown Hotel Vancouver

Great value for Vancouver!

from tools35
We stayed here for one night and, although the area is kind of scary, the hotel itself is very nice and a great value for the city. The staff were extremely helpful and went out of their way to help us. The free shuttle dropped us off on Robson street, and from there it was only a 15-20 minute walk back to the hotel. We made it back safely without any incidents. I will definately stay there again. The rooms were clean and comfortable.

Location kinda scary, but hotel is nice

from aroundtheworldtravel
The hotel was comfortable. We enjoyed the hot tub, spacious bedroom and bath, and laundry facilities. However, we ended up eating in the adjacent restaurant both nights because the area was a bit too sketchy for us to walk around in at night. The complimentary shuttle was booked on the day we arrived, but available the second day to take us to Stanley Park. The price was fairly resonable, but next time I might spend a bit more to be in a better area.

Good value for Vancouver

from HBDutytravel
We stayed twice in this hotel overnighting on our way to and from Vancouver Island. Reading the reviews and the concerns about the area we were curious to see it ourselves. It is true, the lower end of Granville Street is somewhat seedy and slightly run down with many people hanging around that obviously have geater problems in life than worrying which hotel to choose. But this is reality in a big city and in this case it was never a security issue or annoying in any way. We enjoyed the location - walking distance to the shopping areas of Robson Street and Yaletown. The character of streets and neighbourhoods changes from one block to another - again, typical for big North American cities. The hotel itself was a nice and modern Best Western - nothing to complain about. The underground parking and internet came for free (but ask first whether there is internet in the room - some don't have connection).

My husband and I enjoyed our stay at this hotel and would stay there again. The room was large with a full kitchen and a king sized bed.

Though there are no balconies off the rooms, there is a large rooftop patio with a couple of tables/chairs - great view of the city. There are fitness machines, pingpong table, laundry facilities, etc. up there too. The hot tub is there also and the picture on the Best Western site is decieving. It's actually a dreary dark room and the ceiling seems low. We had to call down for towels the morning we used it - there were just dirty towels on the floor. But that's our only complaint about the hotel. And there's no pool (for some reason we thought there was).

There is a computer in the lobby with Internet access - we noticed it as we were checking out (it's tucked in a corner).

The location of the hotel is great! The hotel is on the corner of Drake/Granville. Granville is a lively street at night with lots of pubs, restaurants, night clubs, etc. There is a blues bar right across the street and the Powder Blues Band was playing when we were there. We were out every night and felt safe.

There is a grocery store (IGA) not far away, and a convenience store and a liquor store next door. White Spot is attached to the hotel.

We explored Vancouver by foot (we're walkers) and this hotel is close to everything. A ten minute walk gets you to the ferry that takes you to Granville Island (you can see it from the hotel). Less than thirty minutes along the beach got us to Stanley Park - and a 9 km walk after that. You can walk everywhere - historic Gastown, trendy shopping on Robson, Yaletown, BC Place, casino, harbour cruises and lots more. Coming back from Yaletown one evening, we came upon a Brazilian street festival (free food and drinks).

Great place, great staff

My mother and I visited Vancouver for the first time July 21st - 23rd and were in shock upon arrival at the location of our first hotel. Originally, we were to stay in the Dominion Hotel in the Gastown area. Unfortunately, we did not know the area is where most of the drug addicts and homeless hangout. We made the decision to stay some place else.

That is when the Best Western in Downtown Vancouver became a haven from the storm. We found it by chance after talking to a friendly postal worker about Vancouver.

Chelsea Derby was working the front desk and was so friendly. The hotel only had availability for one night and she offered to help my find another location for the rest of my stay. Furthermore, Vancouver is very extensive this time of year due to it's their peak season and other events, and we were only charges $159 Canadian dollars compared to the going rate of $199 Canadian dollars.

The building is newly renovated and has mini refrigs and microwaves in the room.

The only con was that the location surrounding area did not look safe and slightly rundown but like any major city sometimes looks can be deceiving. The area had some nice restaurants and within walking distance of Yaletown and the shopping/entertainment district on Robson Street.

Good hotel if you don't mind the price

from Mike463502
My fiance and I recently stayed at this hotel for two nights and had a very good experience. We had no problems and we were happy with the way things went. The room we were in was nice and clean. The rest of the hotel was also clean and the workout room was very nice with lots of different things to workout on and there is also a great view of the city from the roof. The price is a little high but not too bad depending on where you get your reservations from. The only real downside to the hotel is it's location because it's in a neighborhood that attracts people of all different sorts but it is still very safe. We walked around the area at midnight and had no worries at all. We recommend this place to anyone who wants an above average hotel and doesn't mind paying a little bit more.

Good deal!

from traveling_fr0m_TX
I stayed for three nights in March and was very pleased with the facility. The security was excellent, the workout facilities clean and generous, and the breakfast filling. The neighborhood wasn't the best - Granville Street has some rougher spots and some shops not appropriate for children - but it was convenient walking distance to most of the sites of the city I wanted to see.

Very Satisfied

from chelmail
March 5-7, 2004. We stayed at this hotel 3 nights and were very satisfied with our stay. The continental breakfast was a nice perk.

They served cereal, fruit, and lots of bread products--pastries, rolls, muffins, etc. with a variety of beverages. It was nice. The room was perfectly adequate. We had a somewhat small room, but it was a corner room with 2 large windows. We did not need any more space. We only use the room to sleep in at night. Not to relax our days away. They even had an umbrella in the room, which we used. We tried out the hot tub on the top floor and enjoyed that. There was ping pong up there too. We signed up for their free shuttle to downtown, but they left without us.

Without a blink of their eye, they ordered us a cab for our destination on them. Customer service is very important to them. We would recommend them.

Excellent place to stay

We go to Canada three or four times a year and this is our favorite hotel to stay at. We love it! for our 15th wedding anniversary we stayed in the Penthouse suite. It was amazing. The staff has always been helpful, the parking is free, and the views are great. It is close to everything. We love it. The only negative thing to note is there is no restraunt on site.

Best Western Downtown

We were very pleased with our accomadations at this hotel. The location was great and the staff was always so friendly and helpful. Rooms were very clean and the kitchenette was well stocked with toaster, tea kettle, coffee maker even a colander. The hotel also provided a shuttle into downtown and the staff gives good recommendations to sites and restaurants. The top floor with the fitness center provided a great view as did the hot tub room. Will stay there again should we return to visit Vancouver.
