      ... a broken engine serpentine belt. It's time to make a call to Good SAMs Roadside assistance. We were dead in the water. By this time of the day, which was around noon, it was about 103 so it was time to turn on the generator, put in a movie and get something to drink (non-alcoholic of course) because it was going to be a long day. After many phone calls with a tech the decision was made that parts weren't available to fix it on site and would have to be next ...

      Well, we've completed the first leg of our journey, the long trip down I-5 to the California sunshine!

      We caught the 4 pm Port Angeles ferry from Victoria on Jan. 2 (after paying a shocking $280 one-way fare for truck, trailer and reservation fee!) and, for the first-time-ever, we were detained at the border crossing while they searched our truck and trailer with a fine-tooth comb in the pouring ...

      ... abundant here than in Sequoia. In our travels we encountered deer, California ground squirrels, Uinta chipmunks, more Acorn Woodpeckers, Steller Blue Jays and best of all a young black bear. We watched the bear for almost an hour as he first climbed around in a tree and then roamed the ground around the tree eating acorns.

      Leaving the park we had to start making our way back south hoping to get to Death Valley tomorrow.

      ... and probably has more available for all 5 kids. This would be smart to do for the day we have the most time. So for a heads up, there is a $5. Per ticket charge for those tickets purchased at the door during prime times, MLK being one of them. You can purchase the tickets on-line for no extra charge and they are good for any one-time visit, which is what we did. We will pick up our tickets at the kiosk on Sunday. We will split up for a little while when Dale takes the older kids ...
