In the Morning, I'm Makin' (Belgian) Waffles!

... Justice and finally swung back towards the train station. Overall, I'd have to say that Brussels was actually not as cool as Bruges – I mean, it was still awesome to be there, don't get me wrong, but Bruges seemed so much more consistently attractive. Brussels had pockets of historic buildings and cute streets, but there were some parts that were definitely not as nice (including a red light district that we accidentally discovered one night walking ...

Brussels after Brugge...

... has been closed to the public since early September - damn!
Went to Castillon brewery instead which specialises in Lambics made the traditional way which takes 1-3 years to ferment naturally rather than modern lambic methods that speed up the process of the natural airborne yeast.
Got to taste their Gueuze which is their standard lambic without anything else added. Very tart and acidic compared to other lambics I've tasted. Almost ...

Day 7 - Quick stop in Brussels in tropical temps

... musique!”. It was a great end to a somewhat trying day. Really, this was the only difficult day of our trip and it was mostly due to the weather and being too ambitious about walking in the heat. I’m left with fond memories of Brussels, though I may not go out of my way to return.

Tomorrow: We arrive in Germany! Rental car, Rhine cruise, gummi bears, and wine!

Brussels Experience

... the best I've ever had. It was disappointing to know, though, that some locals don't think that Brussels have anything good to offer. My taxi driver asked me why I chose to stay in Brussels for a holiday. He said that most Belgians stay as far away as possible when they do on holidays. It's too bad they can't see the beauty that I saw in the 2 days that I was there. I will definitely go back, but I'll make sure I'll go to Bruges as well.

Rainy day in a new land!

... the bedrooms are closed for cleaning. After the lengthy discussion and argument, which naturally included three staff members (as our many arguments always did), they allowed only Alex to go up. Fine. ALL the way back to the embassy. Long métro ride #3. Only, the consular services desk is now clsed for lunch, and will re-open at 2 pm, and even then, we can only see them if we have an appointment. We left the embassy feeling very frustrated, and decided to go for a walk along ...

The Capital of Europe

... moules marinieres (with frites, of course) and a large Mousel beer (a small is too small, and a large, too large...). Delicious meal... The waiter spotted my Canadian accent, and told me he'd flown through Montreal once, and it was minus 60 degrees! I didn't argue with him, that minus 60 has (to my knowledge) never been recorded in Montreal, because - well, such a memory cannot be erased from a man's brain simply by pointing out that it cannot be accurate. His entire trip to North ...

on the road again and water

Hey what a day! We are now in Belgium. We rode a ferry to France and then a motor coach here. We took a coach to the center of the city and got to see lots of old architecture. We also ate a Belgium waffle and greek food. Jobey has had a great time and things are good. It is almost 11 at ...

I love Brussels.

This weekend was so much fun. We had a few bumps along the way, but the city was so pretty and cozy and, most importantly, CLEAN. For the most part the people were very friendly, even though Jenny and I don't speak a word of French. And of course I got to see Emily (!) and meet a bunch of her Bain friends, and go to all the events (the fun ones, at least). Brussels doesn't have a whole bunch in the way of sightseeing, but it was definitely enough to fill up 2 days. We visited museums ...

WARNING: Belgium is not English friendly....

... up at 10 I think call Jeff again because he has offered to put me up and get directions to his place, turns out he was like a 15 minute walk, easy. Hmmm what happens Saturday, oh right, well Jeff has some studying to do for a test he is taking later this year, so I wander around the town doing some more sight seeing went to Palais Royal (Royal Palace) and Place Royale (Royal Place) and then guess what happened next, it started raining, a lot harder than the day before ...

Beer in Bruges...

Belgium is world-famous for producing a few things. Beer. Chocolate. Chips. Tennis mixed doubles partners. OK, maybe not that last one so much, but quite frankly we only needed three good reasons. And so that is how the six of us came to be awaiting a train to Brussels for a quick weekend away. The central theme of the weekend, like so many of our trips, was food and drink. So as the train pulled out we pulled out a veritable smorgasbord of cheeses ...
