Rolla to Broken Arrow (Tulsa) - 345 miles

Our day started with a visit to the Totem Pole Trading Post, literally next door to our motel. This is the only business in Rolla still trading since the 1930s. As the route had been realigned several times over the decades, the shop had been moved too. The old boy running the shop gave us a …

... the underground river and out another exit. Further on in the guided walk, there were a couple of areas with impressive stalagmites and stalegmites - very similar to what we had seen in France. There was a brief sound and lighting show at the end in the the area called the "Theatre", but this was really corny and just made us think how much better the ones were in France. On the road back to Route 66 we passed a shop which sold chainsaw carvings. On ...

Would really like to see the park in a couple of weeks; the forest would be ...

... which we passed about 20 miles ago. Very heavily advertised and apparently Jesse James hideout. This place is not commercialized at all and has great reviews of the caves. Tomorrow we will see. Cooked up a gourmet meal of wieners on onion buns with melted cheese. Why do things taste so good when you're camping? Got to love the $9 bottle of Gnarly Head 2011 Cab Sauvignon that went with dinner, maybe that's what improved things ...

... people we met there: Lincoln is home to the world's largest covered wagon replica. There is a grey sadness to this place, perhaps it's economic at the root. At the Alley-By Pub, beer is $1.25, free cheddar slices and Ritz crackers soak up the excess. The Bears are losing to Green Bay. Was it fumbled? Was it an interception? Paully, who has been drinking for a week, rants. Other fans simply shrug it off and focus on ...

Proper motel with rooms accessed directly from the car park. Handy for Route 66 as it sits directly on the route. Comfortable compact rooms and helpful staff when we stayed.
