Proper motel with rooms accessed directly from the car park. Handy for Route 66 as it sits directly on the route. Comfortable compact rooms and helpful staff when we stayed.

Rolla to Broken Arrow (Tulsa) - 345 miles

Our day started with a visit to the Totem Pole Trading Post, literally next door to our motel. This is the only business in Rolla still trading since the 1930s. As the route had been realigned several times over the decades, the shop had been moved too. The old boy running the shop gave us a …

We applauded after they finished the song they were playing when we walked in, this was of course appreciated as they were only having their Sunday night jamming session. At the top when we exited the capsule, we climbed the stairs to the sky deck. This area was jam-packed with people. Each side of the deck had small viewing windows of you to look out at the panoramic view. We looked out both sides and took our photos, then got in line and returned to solid ground. ...

Odometer reading 598.7 miles We arrived fairly late last night so no real chance to have a look around, but got up this AM, went for a small hike and ran into a park ranger. She told me the forest here is primarily oak which would usually be green by now, but the very harsh winter they had mean no leaves for the oaks yet. I asked ...

... which we passed about 20 miles ago. Very heavily advertised and apparently Jesse James hideout. This place is not commercialized at all and has great reviews of the caves. Tomorrow we will see. Cooked up a gourmet meal of wieners on onion buns with melted cheese. Why do things taste so good when you're camping? Got to love the $9 bottle of Gnarly Head 2011 Cab Sauvignon that went with dinner, maybe that's what improved things ...
