Cold, freezing, even colder- welcome to Bulgaria!!

Due to a different perception of time we only travelled 13 instead of 18 hours from Vienna to Sofia which "enabled" us to spend 5 more valuable hours out in the freezing cold of Sofia, yeah!! Sometimes it's hard to believe that Bulgaria is a EU member... street conditions for cars and pedestrians are hazardous since there are many holes. The favourite food of Bulgarians seems to be pizza and we even met Mr. Flavio Ravioli alias Silvio Berlusconi who visited Sofia ...

... after we chilled out and enjoyed strolling the boulevards and parks in Sofia. Food is very cheap here and we went to O!Shipka for some hearty Bulgarian cuisine - a Grilled kebab and sizzling tray of vegetables but the waitress informed us that it was impossible to serve us any alcohol with our meal because it was the day of the European Elections!! We were very glad to see that the Bulgarians are taking their european democratic duty so seriously.

... went to a party and met some of her friends. She cooked, and showed me around the town. I met up with an Argentinian friend I had met in Belgrade, Emmanual, we went for a coffee at a nice place called Apartment. Check it out the next time you're in Bulgaria.

Sofia finally!

... do you want me to do it?stick it up in your **** and carry you around with it?` i said to the young girl sitting in front of me.She sighed nervously and turned her head. I spent the night at Bojo`s and left for Brasov the next day.Train was empty except a few backpackers, and some of them were the people i met on Sofia train.I spent a few hours with the Canadian couple, and went to my compartment to sleep. I reckon one night in Bulgaria was more than enough for everybody.

... rushed to the ticket office to see what they could do. The woman told me the ticket was still valid for the next train in the morning, however my sleeping compartment ticket was no good and I would have to pay 7.44 leva for a new seat reservation. "Great" I thought, I am going to have to change some money again. Feeling a little tired from all the craziness I headed back to the hotel only to find out they were all booked up for the evening ...

Day 2 in Sophia

... exploration. We first visited The Patriarchal Cathedral of St Alexander Nevski. This cathedral took 42 years to build and was completed in 1924. It was built to commemorate the liberation of Bulgaria from the Ottoman Empire (I'm largely plagiarizing from the guide-book here). This church was by far the most impressive with huge gold domes on the exterior, and very high vaulted ceilings inside covered in various paintings depicting most of the major events of ...

... suffered the avances of a middle aged Australian. Some Peace Corps volunteers were taking a few days off. One of them had shaved the middle of his head and sported a comb over. All manners of people ascended the steps to hostel Mostel. Makes you want to be there too, doesn't it? As for Sofia herself, she is an underrated city. We spent an afternoon taking in her sights, which looked surprisingly Austrian, not at all like Romania and unlike Belgrade ...

... anything positive from other travelers who passed through Bucharest but wanted to see it for myself. It was ok - lots of communist era drab buildings. There's a nice theater and art museum. Cismigiu Gardens in the center of town was a good place for a wander and had some cute cafes by the lake. As I started toward the Palace of Parliament, but the afternoon thunderstorm poured down rain so I found shelter. That passed after about 20 min so I could walk around again ...

... you love her but I love you." "Here there here there, I'll give it to you." It's kind of the bulgarian equiv. of dirty hip hop. So sure it's trashy but I dig it. the united states of England Bulgaria is now a colony of Britain, and the ski resort Bansko is the capital. now that all of Brighton has arrived in Bulgaria to buy real estate, listen to cheesy touristy songs in the mexani (taverns), and to ski, the prices are now twice as high, the food half as ...

... bit of a nanna nap after our showers, we went for a walk around the city to soak up some of Sofia. Was a bustling city and again very cheap - got to love that. While we were out the guys had a hired a car so we were off into the mountains tomorrow for a bit of an adventure. They had heard of this nice place to go hiking from a fellow traveller that was suppose to have all these lakes around but their directions were a bit vague to say the least so ...
