Historical Traveler Reviews Auchen Castle Hotel Beattock
Miserable weather but magical wedding!
We got married at Auchen Castle in September. There were hiccups with the planning as admin is obviously not their strong point. Reception and the phones are under-staffed. It was a month until our wedding was actually confirmed, leaving less than 3 months to plan everything and I ended up doing it all myself so having a Wedding Co-ordinator did not take the stress out of it at all! On the day the weather was extremely disappointing and our garden ceremony did not go ahead but the staff there did make the day run smoothly. There was a lack of communication between hairdresser and make-up lady, and reception, which caused friction, delay and stress but hopefully that will be sorted out once the Beauty Room does open. Despite arriving soaked and bedraggled because of the rain and wind I was rushed into the ceremony and for photos without a chance to tidy myself up, which I do regret, but apart from that everyone was friendly and helpful and it was a wonderful event. Everything else went according to plan, like clockwork, and we were very impressed with the way it ran. Our special thanks go to Kevin Sands, the Registrar, who put us at ease with his humour, Olive Lynn who drove my horse and carriage, CakesbyAnn who supplied a superb wedding cake, BackGarden who supplied the most beautiful bouquet just in time and James Patterson, who entertained us all brilliantly. We all thoroughly enjoyed the day and our stay at Auchen Castle. We hope to return when the weather is better so that we can look around the beautiful grounds. Thank you Auchen Castle!
Fabulous weekend wedding at the Castle. Everything perfect. There is no
question we did the right thing in going there. We had a list of 15
other venues we looked at in the end...Nothing compared to Auchen castle
both in quality and price. We had a church wedding then went there for
reception and evening entertainment. With 100 guests you think it would
be difficult to make sure they all had a great time but the reaction we
got was amazing thanks to the staff the food and location was just
superb. The only down side we went for a tartan theme on the hottest day
of the year!!! If you want a great wedding go there but check the
weather forecast Scotland gets hot weather too! ...
I wanted to tell the world about our amazing Auchen castle experience. We have been to several friends weddings all over the country from Castles in the south to hotels and mansions in the north but by far this was the best location. Not only is it impressive to look at its rooms inside are really beautiful with large oil paintings at reception something my parents who like to think of themselves as art buffs loved. All the guests complimented our choice as it was amazing good value for money considering I have done seven weddings in 12 months I feel I know I thing or two about pricing. The bedrooms could not be faulted, we had all of the castle accommodation and every room is different, we loved all the beautiful décor and with great little extras. The food was excellent and the thing we loved about Auchen Castle was the staff were so very interested in us, making it feel very special. We feel like we have made friends can not wait to go back on our anniversary and relive the memories of a wonderful day. I would recommend Auchen castle and can not believe some of the comments on this page, it's not where we just had our wedding last week that's for sure. Top marks.
Treated Like Royalty
We had a lovely time and want to thank all the staff at Auchen Castle.
It was a great start to our married life...Could not have been any
better. Your photographer was just the best .Managed to get lots of
outside shots even on a wet day and they have turned out much better
than we thought. The grounds were outstanding we loved the menu we
picked our families were most impressed. After our disco retired
upstairs and enjoyed our room that looked over the gardens..The whole
experience could not be faulted...did not feel any pressure on the day
everything ran like clockwork. Recommend Auchen castle to anyone. The
only thing we should have done is stay for an extra night rather than
shooting off which was a mistake. We also did not put any restriction on
the number of friends that wanted to bring there children so should have
thought of that. Great day, great place .Luxury experience but not as
expensive as others by far
Stayed at the hotel recently as part of a wedding party. Although the wedding itself was lovely I would not recommend this hotel for several reasons. Although, the hotel itself is set in beautiful grounds the rooms are in need of tidying up. However, would not have felt inclined to write a review based on the standard of the rooms alone. The main complaint I have with the hotel is the way we were treated at breakfast.
The information in the room states that breakfast is served until 9.30, last orders for a cooked breakfast being at 9am. We were down for breakfast before 9am and were shown to our table by one of the waiters. We were approached by the head waiter after approx 5 minutes who took our order. When we tried to order cooked breakfasts we were told that it was too late as it was after 9am. I explained that we were down before 9am but had been sat for around 5 mins. The waiter was rather rude and insisted that we were not down before 9am and told us that the chef had gone! We then went straight to reception to complain to the duty manager. The duty manager was pleasant but had no authority to do anything. She said that she would leave a note for the owners. We never had our breakfast but from speaking to other guests didn't miss much as it was cold anyway.
We later found out that other guests were told when they checked in that cooked breakfasts were served until 9am but to avoid 'upsetting the chef be down for 8.45'. It therefore seems pointless having a 9am cut off.
We had a few other minor complaints while we were there such as the fact that we requested toilet paper twice but never received any. The night porter (who worked behind the bar later on) spoke very little English and therefore struggled to take orders. The rooms had no complimentary tea trays.
If you are attending a function at Auchen castle would recommend you choose a room in the lodge as they seem to be of a better standard and are also less expensive.
Administration lets the whole place down
I was married at this Hotel on the 22nd March 2005. I had 8 Adult guests and four Children staying with me. In the run up to the Wedding I was supposed to have a 'Wedding Coordinator' - I spoke to her once - and that was the day I rang to book the wedding! There were various mix ups with the admin prior to the wedding, they kept putting us all down for a 2 night stay when we only wanted 1 night etc., whenever I rang my supposed wedding coordinator was not in and my calls & emails were very rarely answered, I complained and was appointed another wedding coordinator who left a message on my answermachine and was never heard from again! The worst mistake was that they took the last payment from my partner's credit card three days earlier than the due payment date stated - they did not even call to ask if this was alright. The contract does state that if payment is not received by the due date it will be taken from the card details given at time of booking, but to take it without asking three days before the due date is rather a liberty!
When I arrived at the hotel on the day of my wedding I was told that my wedding coordinator was off sick & so the Duty Manager took over the job, he was very polite and did his best, but obviously missed a few things: We were supposed to have a complementary bottle of champagne in our room after the service - this never turned up, & I had to ask about it the next morning. There was no hospitality tray in our room either. The food at the hotel is standard fayre and is certainly nothing to write home about, though they did pull out some Quorn at the last minute for the vegetarians in the party (we had previously been told this was not possible). Having said all this, whenever I spoke to somebody personally they were very polite and helpful, also when I got through to a human being on the telephone they were polite too.
Whilst on honeymoon one of the guests telephoned us to say that they had left some items in their room. My new, lovely, husband rang the Hotel to tell them to pack up the items and post them to the name & address of the guest, as we did not want to be disturbed we told them to charge the costs to the bridal account (as all the rooms & costs had been paid for by us on this account) & only to ring us if there was a problem. We had no telephone call, letter, or email, and as yet (2 weeks later) the goods have not been delivered to the guest.
I am currently in the process of trying to find out who the owner is so that I can complain to them directly. I think that the staff try hard, but they are incapable of providing the service that they say they provide - probably because they are all so young (I heard whispers of a lot of them being on some training course!)
We would like to have been able to return to this hotel on occasions such as our anniversary, I have to say that we will not be doing this as, though the staff were helpful & polite, the mistakes, the food, and lack of attention to detail have put us off returning for any special occasion (we had better service at the hotels, restaurants, and guest houses that we stayed at prior to and after the wedding - I am so glad we only stayed for the one night - the night of the wedding.
Needs a lick of paint and a bit of attention
We stayed at this venue recently (Dec 04) and were very disappointed with the accommodation, especially considering the hefty price tag of £140 for a room. For this money, we had expected a bit of luxury. On entering our rooms we discovered that the bathroom smelled musty and that the toilet had not been flushed since the last occupancy. Upon opening a beside drawer, we found an old crumpled-up wedding speech, a screw, a chewed pencil and a pill. As we had a toddler with us we were alarmed that she could have swallowed this pill (whatever it was). Our internal door lock wasn't working, so we had to get maintenance up to rectify this. Plus, we'd specified a cot when booking, but instead were provided with an adult single bed which blocked the wardrobe. Needless to say, housekeeping leaves alot to be desired. The corridor which runs through the hotel's ground floor is scruffy (scuffed skirting boards, dusty mirrors, tatty carpet). The loos themselves aren't luxurious. Wonky and loose door locks, scuffed panels, peeling off stickers, a black plastic sink area dressed with dusty artificial flowers, and stark fluorescent lighting. A hiccup at breakfast time was that we ordered breakfast before everyone on our table, but were the last to receive it. After we pointed this out to staff, they quickly brought out our breakfasts, but they were lukewarm, and had obviously been sitting on the side. That said, the staff WERE exceptional and we couldn't have wished for better service during our stay. Also, the views from the castle are spectacular. If the castle could be spruced up (especially bearing in mind that people spending their weddings here would appreciate a bit more attention to detail) it would be lovely. As it is at the moment, I wouldn't make a return visit and I would advise against choosing it as a wedding venue.
Our Wedding took place on 21 September 2004 at Auchen Castle Hotel at Beattock, Nr Moffat, D&G.
We had 15 guests - 4 of which were children and one baby.
First impressions were that the location was truly magnificent. The views from most rooms were fantastic, overlooking hills, mountains and the gardens. The best view being from the dining room and rooms above.
Each room is unique. We even found the lodge rooms, although not competing with the castle rooms, were perfectly adequate.
When I was walking down the main staircase in my Wedding dress, on the arm of my father, I felt like royalty. Our Wedding ceremony took place in the gardens in front of the fountain and was idyllic.
The food was very good and the staff and Wedding Co-ordinators (although young) were excellent and we cannot praise them enough for their excellent hospitality. Only downside was bar prices. Be prepared!!!
Okay - if booking in advance make sure you get written conformation. I asked and didn't get it. They did however send confirmation to my brother with MY credit card details on it! I and other wedding guests were was later told the prices had increased!! I had to argue for some time and produce copies of my e-mails to have them keep to their promises. I had to threaten to contacting trading standards. The hotel stated it is on the small print they reserve the right to increase prices, but I was never informed of this and on their website its only on the wedding pages. I booked directly so cant be expected to have read this! My advice ask them to ensure the price quoted is the price you will pay to avoid a shock. On arrival I was staying in the lodge rooms. I was assured they could accommodate a family of 2 adults and three small children. To do this they pushed a bed up against a window which meant if I or a child opened the window (which you had to do as it was very hot because the lodge is a prefabricated building with no A/C) a child could roll out and fall 2 stories, a major Health & Safety concern!!!! The bed also blocked the TV and you couldn't get near the drawers. I complained and got a room in the castle where my 3 kids had to share one single bed. We were told that was it or move out. I was attending a family wedding so moving out was not really an option. There where feature rooms available but we were not offered one. The castle rooms are very nice and the service good throughout our 3 day stay. Even the manageress I had to argue and complain to was very pleasant.
Because of having to change rooms and having to argue before hand about prices, this slighted out break somewhat, but is a nice castle and the wedding went off without a hitch. Again the staff were excellent. P.S. Pints £3 - large glass of wine £5.50!!!!
Friendly staff, good food.
Stayed at the Auchen Castle hotel for a week with a group. Very pleasantly surprised by quality of staff, service and food. They have a variety of rooms, so make sure you get one of the bigger ones. Could do with a change of back-ground music - Clannad for a whole week is a bit too much!
