Front desk not present, had to call for service. Hotel is not very old, still in good clean condition. It's out of the way and occupancy was low.

We say goodbye to Michigan, Ohio, Indiana and almost all of Illinois as we traveled west on I-80. Before leaving Indiana, we spent a couple of hours at the Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore - part of the National Park System. The park is adjacent to the Indiana Dunes State Park which was founded in 1926 and Congress appropriated an additional 8.330 acres in 1966 to create the National Park. Today, over 15,000 acres have ...

They say you will not truly see America until you get off the expressway. We use that philosophy every time we head West. This year, we decided to explore the Grand Army of the Republic Highway, better known as US 6. The Grand Army of the Republic is the name of the Northern Army during the Civil War. This highway is dedicated to them, beginning in Massachsetts and ending with a memorial in California. We are traveling parts of it, interspersed with runs along Interstate 80 when it ...

        ... and Mississippi Canal
(Hennepin Canal Trail). There is about
100 miles of old towpath trail that has been turned into a bike/walking trail
along the canal. A great idea for making
the old canal accessible. It was built
in the 1800’s to connect the Illinois River with the Mississippi across
northern Illinois but was quickly replaced by the railroads. ...

... many great locations along the way.

Dixon is on the Rock River and is also where Ronald Reagan grew up. The town has a nice set of trails along both sides of the river for bikes and walking. There is low dam on the river just upstream from downtown and I was surprised to see pelican's in the river just below the dam. Pelicans in central Illinois seem
