... Palm Desert we pulled into another lookout. This one was packed with cars and a big motorcycle group (old ***** like us). The view was spectacular. To the southeast (through the haze) you could see a faint outline of the Sultan Sea, an inland salt lake.

Below us you could see the road snaking down, back and forth with several hairpin turns. And below that was Palm Desert, a bright green oasis, surrounded by the barren mountains and desert. It's easy to tell that ...

... it didn't really die down for most of the way to the turn off for Hemet. LA seemed to go on forever and once we were out of the city itself it was just suburb after suburb after suburb as far as we drove. We turned south about 16 miles west of Palm Springs and drove south another 15 miles or so to the town of Hemet.
