... to Lego Land. After dinner in Bakersfield, we drove a bit on to Mojave, CA.

That last stretch took us through the mountains. While the sun was setting behind us and beautiful long shadows were being cast on the hills to our sides, we turned off the highway to pull into Mojave and we noticed the first Joshua Trees.

It has started!

... The other option is to hitch hike from paradise valley cafe to idyllwild's Humber Park and take the Devil's Slide Trail 2.5 miles to where it connects to the PCT 1.5 miles north of the closure. Most hikers were taking this option. After much discussion we decided to take the hitch hiking route and make up the miles on side trails along the way. ... so badly but progressively it got worse. Our moral was boosted though when we came across some wildlife. I was really hoping to see a snake in the desert, and was hoping to persuade Jennifer to go on a little trek to find one! But crossing the dirt track about 7-8 miles into the route was a tortoise! I didn’t know they lived in deserts!

We spent some time harassing the tortoise and then set off again ...
