Grand Canyon to Kingman

From the Grand Canyon we travelled through more Desert to Kingman, which is where we were joining Route 66.

The evening went through to a lekka Cowboy restaurant and had a great evening enjoying some steak.

Gamblin & losin in Vegas

... a small town on the way and enjoyed ice cream and took photos of the strange assortment of paraphenalia that diners along the route had collected. Not exactly sure what the town was called, but I do know we were on what is now Route 40 in Arizona (yea sorry about my shifty memory - I think the tequila in Mexico has got to it).

That night in Vegas was pretty subdued. A group of us ...

Route 66 and Grand Canyon

... ground. Comparing it to Bryce Canyon, one is the beauty and one is the power. After doing all the different viewpoints we set off for Kingman (heart of route 66). The drive took 4 hours which these days is not even a thought and camped the night at a KOA site. There were about 25 students next to us who literally slept under the stars in their sleeping bags it was ...

Truxton to Kingman

... days like this you just want to quit especially when the rain comes. Its not suppose to rain the desert but it did. Its such a good feeling to be cared about. They included me in their lunch and I had a nice warm place (the RV) while lunch was being prepared. I still cant get over the hospitality people can give you without even really knowing you.

Sign, sign, everywhere a sign!

... route. Grand Canyon West is north east of where I am camped. I headed north and then east to get there. The map I had showed a road that headed south towards Peach Springs on Route 66. It was gravel, but I figured I have some time to kill. I take the turnoff and a sign says 50 miles to Peach Springs. On my left I pass about a dozen guys on motorcycles stopped on the side of the road. I'm distracted and must have missed a sign that says road work ...

On the Road Again

... along this drive - there was some - but not much! We have learned that when we see a gas station, we top up the tank. You never know where the next one will be or what the price will be. We turned west towards Kingman and made a stop at the Mohave Museum of History and Arts. At this stop we found excellent interpretative displays of the history of the area, a large room containing a tribute to Andy Devine (Roy Rogers and other westerns), the ...

Shave & a Hair Cut, Two Bits!

... off this wretched Interstate and drive the Historic Route 66. The first sign, or signs I see on the side of the road are quite cryptic. There are six red signs in a row with a few words on each. The last one says, Burma Shave. Further up the road I see the same thing, this time I get it. I have to think about it a bit. But the message is hilarious. I'm laughing so hard I almost pee in my pants. Not quite, but I did have tears streaming down my cheeks. I ...

There is a canyon out there. Somewhere...

... has anything to do with horses, it will most likely be dodgy. Although it only started as a theory, we have tested it for fourteen years and every occassion we have stayed somewhere horse related, from the Spanish Horseshoe in Towsville (vortex-like beds) to the Jockey Club in Las Vegas (two week old turkey dinner in the oven) and everywhere in between, it has proved true. The casual traveler would be well advised to remember the rule. Drive - 200 miles

Made it back after the Holidays.

... go crazy and run all over the car, perching on my shoulder as I drive or looking out the windows with her tails flickering quite madly. When we would get to the hotel, she would demand all our attention. She's a good cat, named Mogwai. I don't know if I spelled that correctly. Anyway, since getting back to AZ. I have been working on the earthship very little. Instead, I have been trying to get to know this place, I don't want to let this slip by. It's ...
