We left Rapid City and visited Mt. Rushmore. Following that we went to Devil's Tower and hiked half way around the base of the mountain. Then we went to Cody, WY for the night.

... pre cambian rock that was over 2.5 billion years old.
One word of caution when signs say loose livestock, believe them. Leaving the mountain, cows were unfenced and crossing the road. Our day was slowing to a crawl as we reached Cody, WY. Due to weather and possible road closures we decided to call it a day and found an amazing steakhouse. Great way to ...
Cody, Wyoming, United States lindasgibbons... morning we got up early and made our way to Wyoming, which immediately proved Andrew's premonitions correct that it was both incredibly beautiful and desolate. We learned that Wyoming is America's foremost coal producing state and were awed by how barren the areas right off the highway were. We drove through Bighorn National Forest which took us to our first +9,000ft elevation, and some seriously scary mountain pass driving. We then went on ...

The claim of fame to this little gem of a place is that outlaw Butch Cassicy once lived in the area and was arrested outside the Cowboy Bar which is still in business today.

We were grateful that we did not rush here for the parade and were wondering whether we should have even contemplate visiting the community barbecue hosted by the ranchers wives, but we did.

The whole set up was reminiscent ...

After being tested and the kids reciting their Junior Ranger promise (which was an optional extra I must add) they were bestowed their new rank. The Ranger stood up and announced their award to the whole of the Visitors Centre and a large round of applause followed (well as much noise as 12 people could make). The kids were really chuffed.

We left Yellowstone through the west exit which was about 9,000 feet above ...
Cody, Wyoming, United States prieststripFrom the Black Hills, we made our way into Wyoming, where we would be for about three weeks. We drove through Spearfish Canyon on our way to Devil’s Tower (of “Close Encounters of the Third Kind” fame). We had planned to hike up a trail to get closer to Devil’s Tower, but once again, the weather gods had decided that it would rain (this will be a recurring theme). But we saw enough to discern the “ ...

There are couple of different pools available and each one is a different temperature.

By the time I arrived in Cody it was early evening so I went for a couple of beers at a nearby bar and then went for dinner in an italian restaurant, which was really good. I was expecting tomorrow to be a long day in Yellowstone so I made sure I wasnt out too late this time.
Cody, Wyoming, United States maccasworldtourAfter the debacle of no restaurant in the hotel last night and going to bed with no food it was a nice surprise to get a FREE breakfast this morning. The temperature was a cool 3 degrees C/39F. Rather bitter! We crossed the border from Sth Dakota into Wyoming and had a lunch stop at a Perkins Restaurant where we struck up a conversation with a couple ...
Cody, Wyoming, United States david.mackeyWe spent 7 days in Yellowstone and have a lot of impressions and feel that we did a good job of seeing the sights. In my previous blog, I said the animals were most impressive to me. That's a little curious since the thermal features are more unique. After all, it is in the caldera of a super volcano that is accumulating magma for another gigantic eruption. AND it is 40,000 years overdue. So that ...

Cody, Wyoming, United States kimb3rly_jad3... the building and watched a movie about the history of the park. I was able to find out that Yellowstone is and was the very first National Park. After the area was explored, by a person whose name I can't recall right now, his reports of the geysers and some other 'unbelievable' features resulted in his observations not being taken seriously! Several others then reported similarly and finally the area was given the attention it deserved. Then there was a period of time ...
