... manicured green spaces edged by extraordinary buildings housing museums, government agencies, etc. my favourites were the Botanic Gardens, national Gallery of Art, Sculpture Garden, the Capitol Building and the Washington Monument. Found a wonderful place for lunch in the National Museum of the American Indian and then our feet and energies gave up so we bought a 24 hour ticket on the Hop On, Hop Off bus and spent the rest of the day sightseeing on our bottoms! Met a group of Korean Vets who have made a pilgrimage to the war memorial from Missouri. The came in 3 buses and had the T-shirts and flags. So american but then again very emotional for them.

No visit to DC is complete without having seen the White House. Actually it's not really possible to visit it as for that you have to schedule a tour with the embassy (!). What you can do is to visit the visitors' center, but now it's closed for renovation. There is a temporary one and all it offers is a 30-minute video about the history and the interior design of the White House. Quite interesting, but nothing ...
