We came into Illinois yesterday, after leaving Missouri. Well we sure had a welcome, as the heavens opened plus a beaut electrical storm. It was rather scary to be travelling in a little tin can, with a tempest albeit short lived.raging round us. Nowhere safe to stop, so onwards we travelled. Thank goodness.when the next blast came 10 mins later, we weren't quite so scared, or at least one of us admitted they were!

... but all I wanted to do was drive THROUGH these road works as our mission was to drive on the original course of Route 66 as much as possible. He wanted me to go back to the 1930's by-pass and I wanted to drive around the roadworks on the grass. I won because we were Brits and such.

In most places along Route 66 the original course is right through the middle of town - this is around 1926 to 1930. In the 1930's by-passes were built around the towns as traffic got heavier ...
