The Tallgrass Prairie once covered 140 million acres of North America. The Tallgrass Prairie National Preserve was established in 1996 to preserve, protect, and interpret the less than four percent of remaining tallgrass prairie ecosystem. The 10,894 acre preserve ...

There are many concretions in this Park, but some of it still remains and has been supporting three of the rocks for many years.
The resulting combination of rocks have a mushroom shape. The unusual shapes caught the imaginations of the Native Americans and pioneers, some of whom have left graffiti in softer sandstone.
Fort Larned NHS:
Fort Larned was established on the vast prairie in Western Kansas midway along the Santa Fe trail in 1859 to protect mail coaches, freighters and other Trail traffic from Plains Indians. With nine beautifully restored buildings, Fort Larned is the best preserved Indian Wars military post on the Santa Fe Trail. As the site of an Indian Agency, Fort Larned also was instrumental in maintaining friendly relations with Plains Indians. In July 1978, six years ...

Dwight was nicknamed Ike. He was of German descent and in German, Eisenhower was pronounced "Ike- enhower". Dwight preferred to be remembered as General Eisenhower rather than President Eisenhower.
Brown V. Board of Education NHS:
On May 17, 1954, the Supreme Court unanimously declared that segregated educational facilities are "inherently unequal" and, as such, violate the 14th Amendment of the U.S. Constitution. This decision by the Supreme Court was one of the most significant in U.S. history. Its affirmation of the 14th Amendment made it clear to all Americans that the federal government would ...
... 8217;t pass on the chance to visit the “Oz Museum”.
The Wamego exit led nine miles along a small two lane road dotted with occasional homes and stands of trees, their yellowing leaves blowing hard in the wind. Wamego is the home of the Oz Museum and I arrived at my lunch time. There was an old theater in this one street town that was showing Wizard of Oz, except on Sunday. Two stores down was a ...
... through the state who knew that this is the birthplace of Annie Oakly, Walter Chryslter, Eisenhower's Museum and Library, Dalton Gang Hideout and the original Boot Hill at Dodge City. We also passed a place that advertised the worlds larges prarie dog and a 5 legged steer.
When we got to the middle of the state we saw wind turbins for at least 10 miles and I stopped counting at 50 just at the beginning. I guess this must be the windy state

In the morning after eating cereal and packing the trailer up, we were just about to leave when dad noticed that the rear left tire on the van was loosing air pressure. So we went to an auto tire shop and got a new wheel .Fortunately, we were able to start heading west again only about an hour later than we planed. For lunch we ended up eating at McDonalds. Later in the after noon, we ...
Salina, Kansas, United States millerfamily... next to his kids, and take it to the dumpster for us. Needless to say, we were extremely happy and it renewed our faith in humankind. The kids were very tired of our long journey to Salina, Kansas today - six-and-a-half hours in the RV, and we only stopped once, at Dairy Queen, and to fill up the gas tank. Rebecca's son, Warner, had the hardest time. For some reason, he didn't fall asleep in the car at all, and he threw several tantrums ...
Salina, Kansas, United States rebeccapcohen... wasn't a cloud in the sky. The long shadows of the early morning only enhanced hot bright the sun was. By mid-morning I had made it into Los Alamos. The laboratory here is where the Manhattan Project was located during the Second World War. This is the birthplace of the possible annihilation of the world. As I drove through town it felt empty, no doubt because it was only 9am on a Sunday but it gave me the shivers. The Bradbury Science Museum here is ...
