When we left the gold mine, it was at 3:30 and too early to go back to our accommodation. So we decided to drop by the Senkaku Bay Park. It was recommended by the inn's hostess and seemed popular with tourists. To tell the truth, I hesitated to get in the park, because I had to buy a ticket just to see a beautiful scenery, although I had seen many great sceneries for free in the Island. Still I didn't want to waste my time in the trip, so I paid JPY500 at the ticket counter. I ...

After waking up to the alarm and of course snoozing a little bit, we headed downstairs to the showers, taking the bedlinen with us to reception, as this was the day of our check out from J-Hoppers in Takayma. We packed our stuff and went downstairs to have breakfast and make sandwiches for the train trip ahead. Great detail at the hostel; they had proper coffee for brewing, not only instant coffee, well done!

Tuna sandwiches in the handbag, as you have, we headed for ...

I’d love to say it was all in the planning, but it was actually pure coincidence that we arrived in the west coast city of Niigata at the start of one of the largest festivals of the year - the Matsuri. This consisted of a parade of 10,000 people dancing, in sync, down the city’s main streets, in yucata, sandals and fans, with the parade song sung live on a loop and tannoyed throughout the ...

I worked with Shun Sawada in 1995 teaching English at Niitsu High School and had the pleasure of meeting his lovely wife, Suzuyo, many times as she taught me Ikebana, Japanese flower arranging. Such a beautiful home, delicious food and stunning Japanese garden and bonsai. A wonderful visit to Yahiko mountain and shrine and the seaside. A trip into Niigata city to Kobari Beach, Sea of Japan. Such kind ...

... a big shop full of the stuff we love. An hour later and much less yens in our wallets we headed across the road to the post office, Giulietta mailed some of her new acquisitions home (which will take 2 months to arrive by ship), I sent some postcards and Morgan airmailed a 2.5kg box of goodies for around $45. Now I made this whole procedure sound easy, don't get me wrong a lot of sweat and tears went into mailing our goods and if it wasn't for the very patient Nippon ...
