... the window. WOW, I saw Mt. Fuji for the first time in person (see the pictures). I know its cliche to say, but I found the symmetry of the mountain was just amazing and really loved looking at the view. But it was time to explore. I had a plain "Western" style breakfast at the hostel of buttered toast, some yogert, and coffee, and picked up lunch at the local convient store (they have them EVERYWHERE in Japan) before meeting up with some ...

Tokyo’s attractions were by no means exhausted, but we have lots of the rest of Japan we’d still like to see, so the next day we used our Japan Rail (JR) Passes to hop on the Shinkansen (bullet train) and headed up to a town called Nikko, in the foothills north of Tokyo. There are a few platform's on the way to the top, to rest. However none of them have shelters, meaning you are the whole night exposed to ...

... fairly dense fog. We hoped it would burn off so we can see the summit as well as the lakes around the base. Since Will was with us and he can't monitor himself for altitude sickness, we were on an MWR Fuji Family Hike Tour hiking a loop from the Fifth to the Sixth Station. I knew Mike was disappointed as he was supposed to trek to the summit last month, but his trip got cancelled due to heavy rain and road closures. He jealously watched the "real" hikers as they ...

... sardine tin, so we struggled to sleep well at all. No water supply there. Dinner was served at 4pm then made to go to bunk beds to make space for people arriving later to have their dinner. Tried to go to sleep around 6:30pm. Wake up call was at 2am to hike the rest of the way to the summit for sunrise. We were determined not to get stuck in the queue of people going up to the summit so left before the rush at 1am. We totally missed all the crowds and made it to the summit in good ...
