... the most interesting stop of the day as we found Stockholm not as exciting as the hype that surrounded it. We mainly walked around old town, passed the royal palace, many churches and little shops that were in the many lane ways around the city. With Stockholm ticked off the list, we cruised back to Tallinn that night, arriving in the morning in time to get a bus to Riga, Latvia.
The accommodation we had booked in Riga was a bit of a bonus for us because we ...

We all had a coffee and pastry. I had an elk pie, as they called it, and an apple one. Elk is nice. From there we all split up.

... bus stop designated on the slip of paper we were given at the camping. We walked a couple of hundred metres into the old town and like magic, the transformation from former Soviet republic to fairy tale medieval city was complete. Of course it was all done for the tourists, including us, but I am at a loss to see why Moscow left this bit of town alone, so that come independence, there was a medieval town still there to tart up and touristify. We wandered around a ...

There were few other patrons braving the winter weather, giving realism to the rural scenes. Thatched roofs prevailed, although other building materials varied. Inside the inn, I warmed up with mulled wine and traditional spiced cake. Before catching my return bus, I ...

Originally there were going to be about 6-7 of us from Tucan doing the tour, but in the end it was just Sav, Michael, Edwin and myself. There was one other person not from our Tucan group that did the tour as well. As opposed to my Amsterdam tour in which our only equipment was a bike, here we were also required to wear a helmet and a high visibility vest. I am sure if anyone ...

Historical Traveler Reviews Baltic Hotel Vana Wiru Tallinn
You can't fault this city hotel on value for money, cleanliness and location, and all the reception staff were very friendly and spoke very good English. On the downside however, our room wasn't ready when we arrived around lunchtime and we had to ask several times for items for the room ie. tea/coffee facilities, tissue and soap for the bathroom.
We have just returned from a 3 night stay at the excellent 4 star Hotel Vana Wiru in Tallinn. It is an oasis of peace and tranquility right in the centre of the beautiful, medieval old town. The rooms are large, basically furnished, but very comfortable, well maintained and spotlessly clean. There is a large, comfortable lounge, an Italian restaurant and the hotel has it's own pub attached to it, which stays open until the early hours of the morning!! The buffet breakfasts in the restaurant are superb with a choice of porridge, scrambled eggs, boiled eggs, sausages, fried potatoes, cold meats, cheeses, cereals, yoghurts, fruit juices, toast, jams and tea and coffee. The staff are very friendly and helpful. One afternoon we were sitting in the lounge on our own, recovering from a days sightseeing and the porter (unasked) made up a log fire in the large open fireplace and lit it just for us. Superb!! Tallinn old town is beautiful and all the excellent bars, restaurants and major sights are virtually on the doorstep of this wonderful hotel. I would thoroughly recommend the Hotel Vana Wiru and would most certainly stay there again. One tip: If you want to use a credit or debit card to pay for a meal in a restaurant in Tallinn and the bill comes to more than 500 Estonian Kroons, they will ask to see some ID such as your passport or driving licence.
We spent four nights at the Vana Wiru in August. The location is fantastic-right inside the city walls. It is located in a quiet courtyard area. We were lucky enough to get a room upgrade to a junior suite on the top floor. The views over the old town were fantastic, and we had the luxury of a sauna in the bathroom. Breakfasts were good and the hotel serves quality food in the evening. If you don't want to go too far at the end of a busy day the Vanu Wiru has a bar attached to it. Staff were helpful and courteous. Stay here if you want a four star hotel which is reasonbly priced right in the centre of one of Europe's most charming cities.
Wonderful hotel in the best location!
Just got back 4 days ago from a 5 night stay in this hotel and haven't got a bad word to say about it. The location is just perfect, just moments from the town hall square and right by the beautiful Viru Gates of the old town. Perfect.
We had a junior suite deluxe at an EXCELLENT reduced rate so we had our very own sauna in our room which was amazing! The room was on the top floor so we had a wonderful view of the old town looking across over St. Olafs Church.
Breakfast was ample and a good selection of hot and cold food and the staff were very friendly.
Oh and there is a pub located within the hotel which is very handy and the drinks are very cheap!
I can't fault this hotel or Tallinn - both wonderful!!!!
Thug on reception
The hotel is quite nice, centrally located and it's clean. However, I brought a guest back to my room and the guy at reception told me that I had to pay a supplement. That annoyed me but I said fine and went to continue on our way. Then we were stopped and made to pay the supplement there and then!! That made me think that this is a hotel I will never stay in again.
I just came back from a cruise to Tallinn, and from staying at the Vana Viru with my family. I am a very picky traveller and have to say that this Hotel is great in every aspect.
Fabulous Hotel - not one thing wrong!
Title: Great Hotel - not one single thing wrong
This hotel is in the middle of everything! Nothing to complain about
at all. Staff were very friendly, breakfast excellent and rooms great
size - with windows that fully open.
Taxi to this hotel from the airport was just 150EEK to 200EEK. All the
loc al restaurants were lovely and provided some entertainment. The
main square and all the bars etc was just 3 minute walk from the hotel.
The hotel looked like it had been recently refurbed as all paintwork
very clean and tidy - all hotel was very very clean!
Would stay here again for sure!
Not sure how many stars this hotel has... but should be a four or five
what a fabulous hotel! I have food allergies to fish and peanuts and the receptionist kindly translated this into Estonian for me... also the doorman was extremely kind in giving us directions etc. A very friendly hotel.
Siblings from suffolk
Stayed here a weekend in early March when even the sea was frozen. Right by Katherine's passage, with the woollen market situated right outside, and 2 minutes from the main square it has a great position. The staff were very friendly and the rooms large, warm, clean and modern. We had 2 rooms on the 5th floor (for a sibling reunion) with views over the snow covered city and, as there were few guests, it was like having private appartments. There was a large chioce for breakfast and the 5 oat porridge was excellent. Only negative is that we booked the steam suana for private use (great) but it smelt rather of drains. Still would highly recommend the hotel as great value for money.
Loved the Van Wiru
Stayed at the Vana Wiru just before christmas and had a brilliant time. Hotel was excellent, with friendly staff and a buffet breakfast serving hot and cold selection. Location could not have been better, just inside the walls of the old town and within walking distance to all sights. A nice cosy pub area is attached to the hotel if one does not want to brave the freezing temperatures. Would defintely recommend this hotel and certainly a visit to Tallinn before it becomes too touristy!! ( Before christmas is a nice time to go, although cold, the christmas market and the snow gave a lovely christmas atmosphere)
