Historical Traveler Reviews of Best Eastern Vana Wiru Tallinn

Fab central hotel

from snogaroonies
You can't fault this city hotel on value for money, cleanliness and location, and all the reception staff were very friendly and spoke very good English. On the downside however, our room wasn't ready when we arrived around lunchtime and we had to ask several times for items for the room ie. tea/coffee facilities, tissue and soap for the bathroom.

The buffet breakfast was very good with a range of hot and cold, fruit salad and cereals for the health conscious, and pancakes and syrup for the notso! And the adjoining pub was very handy not only for the short cut to the main street. Tallinn itself is absolutely beautiful and reasonably priced with loads of fantastic restaurants within walking distance of the hotel, Olde Hansa, Must Lammas and Balthasar to name a few.

We went in January and were hoping for snow, unfortunately it was just grey and chilly but will definitely return in the summer before it becomes too popular with the mainstream 'citybreakers'!!

Excellent Hotel

from Eurofile
We have just returned from a 3 night stay at the excellent 4 star Hotel Vana Wiru in Tallinn. It is an oasis of peace and tranquility right in the centre of the beautiful, medieval old town. The rooms are large, basically furnished, but very comfortable, well maintained and spotlessly clean. There is a large, comfortable lounge, an Italian restaurant and the hotel has it's own pub attached to it, which stays open until the early hours of the morning!! The buffet breakfasts in the restaurant are superb with a choice of porridge, scrambled eggs, boiled eggs, sausages, fried potatoes, cold meats, cheeses, cereals, yoghurts, fruit juices, toast, jams and tea and coffee. The staff are very friendly and helpful. One afternoon we were sitting in the lounge on our own, recovering from a days sightseeing and the porter (unasked) made up a log fire in the large open fireplace and lit it just for us. Superb!! Tallinn old town is beautiful and all the excellent bars, restaurants and major sights are virtually on the doorstep of this wonderful hotel. I would thoroughly recommend the Hotel Vana Wiru and would most certainly stay there again. One tip: If you want to use a credit or debit card to pay for a meal in a restaurant in Tallinn and the bill comes to more than 500 Estonian Kroons, they will ask to see some ID such as your passport or driving licence.

Great location

-----

We spent four nights at the Vana Wiru in August. The location is fantastic-right inside the city walls. It is located in a quiet courtyard area. We were lucky enough to get a room upgrade to a junior suite on the top floor. The views over the old town were fantastic, and we had the luxury of a sauna in the bathroom. Breakfasts were good and the hotel serves quality food in the evening. If you don't want to go too far at the end of a busy day the Vanu Wiru has a bar attached to it. Staff were helpful and courteous. Stay here if you want a four star hotel which is reasonbly priced right in the centre of one of Europe's most charming cities.

Wonderful hotel in the best location!

from Squiz
Just got back 4 days ago from a 5 night stay in this hotel and haven't got a bad word to say about it. The location is just perfect, just moments from the town hall square and right by the beautiful Viru Gates of the old town. Perfect.

We had a junior suite deluxe at an EXCELLENT reduced rate so we had our very own sauna in our room which was amazing! The room was on the top floor so we had a wonderful view of the old town looking across over St. Olafs Church.

Breakfast was ample and a good selection of hot and cold food and the staff were very friendly.

Oh and there is a pub located within the hotel which is very handy and the drinks are very cheap!

I can't fault this hotel or Tallinn - both wonderful!!!!

Thug on reception

from A TripAdvisor Member
The hotel is quite nice, centrally located and it's clean. However, I brought a guest back to my room and the guy at reception told me that I had to pay a supplement. That annoyed me but I said fine and went to continue on our way. Then we were stopped and made to pay the supplement there and then!! That made me think that this is a hotel I will never stay in again.

Vana Viru Hotel, The Perfect Stay in Tallinn

from A TripAdvisor Member
I just came back from a cruise to Tallinn, and from staying at the Vana Viru with my family. I am a very picky traveller and have to say that this Hotel is great in every aspect.

First of all its location, it is the best located Hotel i have ever been to, it is in the old town, the main tourist attraction. Not on a street but it is own private area that is extremely clean and pleasant. You walk around the corner and you enter the beautiful old town, with its medieval ambiance and filled with shops and restaurants, which are both great in prices and quality. YOu HAVE TO TRY THE SWEET COVERED ALMONDS

The Hotel is beautifully decorated, modern and elegant at the same time. Extremely clean. The staff very helpful and kind. The rooms are very big in size. Mine had it's own Sauna which looked like it had been just built. Amazed by the neatness of the entire Hotel. In front of the Hotel lies a Grill which serves the best meat dishes, freshly made right in front of you, plates large in quantity of food and at excellent prices. Also it has an incredibly cool pub which also serves delicious plates and a fancy italian restaurant. I am dying to go back just to eat the steak with the best grilled vegetables i've ever had( and again i am picky). The air conditioning in the room is the only thing that if you like sleeping with cold ac, it won't happen, but it is just cool enough to sleep at total comfort ( just ask for thin sheets). If you need to take a taxi, the Hotel staff will kindly order one for you and you will be surprised how cheap they are to anywhere you go. There is a 24 hour Drugstore at 500 meters from the Hotel which has everything you will need. And for all the parents out there,it has NANNY SERVICE! So I am planning already my next trip there, and would highly recommend this Hotel to anyone who wants quality, quantity, and the most pleasant visit overall you could have.

Fabulous Hotel - not one thing wrong!

Title: Great Hotel - not one single thing wrong

This hotel is in the middle of everything! Nothing to complain about

at all. Staff were very friendly, breakfast excellent and rooms great

size - with windows that fully open.

Taxi to this hotel from the airport was just 150EEK to 200EEK. All the

loc al restaurants were lovely and provided some entertainment. The

main square and all the bars etc was just 3 minute walk from the hotel.

The hotel looked like it had been recently refurbed as all paintwork

very clean and tidy - all hotel was very very clean!

Would stay here again for sure!

Not sure how many stars this hotel has... but should be a four or five

star!

FANTASTIC!!! STAY HERE!!!

from A TripAdvisor Member
what a fabulous hotel! I have food allergies to fish and peanuts and the receptionist kindly translated this into Estonian for me... also the doorman was extremely kind in giving us directions etc. A very friendly hotel.

Bedrooms are very clean, recently renovated and quite large - have definately stayed in smaller rooms. Windows open fully to let in air - although seagulls are a bit of a nuisance noisewise.... but that cant be helped.

Breakfast is also super. A very wide selection of hot and cold food, cold meats, hot potaties with bacon, fruit, yoghurts, pastries.. all set up on a huge buffet from 8am to 10am.

We would definatley stay at this hotel again as was very very clean and very friendly - quiet at night (when windows closed from birds). This hotel is also located in the old town... all the fabulous restaurants are located about a 2 minute walk away. We ate very well locally - even the restaurants which look touristy are fabulous and frequented by the locals and russians.

STAY HERE!!! its wonderful! Tallinm has been the first place we have ever been to and never had a single thing to moan about.. usually there is a little something which niggles..... but nothing in Tallinn. Get a taxi from the airport... costs just 150-200 EEK

Siblings from suffolk

Stayed here a weekend in early March when even the sea was frozen. Right by Katherine's passage, with the woollen market situated right outside, and 2 minutes from the main square it has a great position. The staff were very friendly and the rooms large, warm, clean and modern. We had 2 rooms on the 5th floor (for a sibling reunion) with views over the snow covered city and, as there were few guests, it was like having private appartments. There was a large chioce for breakfast and the 5 oat porridge was excellent. Only negative is that we booked the steam suana for private use (great) but it smelt rather of drains. Still would highly recommend the hotel as great value for money.

Loved the Van Wiru

from A TripAdvisor Member
Stayed at the Vana Wiru just before christmas and had a brilliant time. Hotel was excellent, with friendly staff and a buffet breakfast serving hot and cold selection. Location could not have been better, just inside the walls of the old town and within walking distance to all sights. A nice cosy pub area is attached to the hotel if one does not want to brave the freezing temperatures. Would defintely recommend this hotel and certainly a visit to Tallinn before it becomes too touristy!! ( Before christmas is a nice time to go, although cold, the christmas market and the snow gave a lovely christmas atmosphere)
