Today the 21st we are on a 300 km trip travelling north to Riga, Latvia. The country is very flat all the way to the Baltic. The countryside is a combination of agriculture, primarily grains, mixed in with forest. The farther north we go more forest and less agriculture. First stop will be Jurmala, a seaside town for lunch. A very nice lunch at a restaurant a few blocks from the Baltic Sea. Jurmala has been a favourite holiday ...

We did a free tasting of balsam, a traditional Latvian liquor drunk after meals to help digest and fight the cold. They are like ...

And that's the short version. Basically Latvians (and their Baltic neighbours) suffered some serious ****. The museum is well set out, with displays in chronological order detailing all the aspects of the different periods of occupation. It was really quite confronting. It included photos of bodies from mass murders by the Soviets. And it even had a reconstruction of the living quarters from a typical ...

... box to take home). We then climbed up to the top of the Church Dome and got a view of the whole city. We ended the afternoon with a honey tasting in a local honey shop. After filling up on sugary honey, we crashed and took a much needed nap. That night for dinner we went to a typical Latvian buffet style restaurant. I tried the recommended "national food" that was a rye bread soup style dessert with cream. To say the least, it was quite an interesting dessert.. ...
