      Waking in a winter wonderland

A travel blog entry by jennymgg on Oct 10, 2014

... which had shrouded the sun the entire trip seemed to dissipate and blue sky appeared, as did large masses of rock along the road. We passed a sign saying 30km to Kirkenes. That 30km took an hour and a half. Speed limits plunged and traffic grew heavier. At one point we were stopped at roadworks for 20 minutes while they were patching something up on the bridge. A bobcat and another piece of machinery would move a metre or two, then one of the operators ...

Today we arrived in Kirkenes, which is a small town, actually in Norway, right up the top and only 6kms from the Russian border!

This is where we embark on our 5 night voyage down to Bergen along the fiords of Norway tomorrow....should be good!

Friday, 9/19, we had a restful morning on the ship. After lunch we had a bus tour of Tromso which is called "The gateway to the Arctic." We saw (1) the Arctic Cathedral, a modern structure built in 1965 (2) the Polaria, a museum with an aquarium and seal pool and (3) an overview of the city. After the tour we went to the closest pub for a glass of the local beer from the northernmost brewery in the world. Late in ...

We docked at 9 and waited in Kirkenes for our bus at 2pm. The 5 hour bus trip across to Murmansk was interesting as was Murmansk! All the apartments are drab, dark as is the city but once inside our apartment we were pleasantly surprised. We also found a great local restaurant which was cheap and had good ...

Marsh, march, sneeze, slap - the tundra?

The trip took 28 hours all in all... The landscape became a blur and we slept as much as we could, sneezing and sniffing through the better part of the journey. No doubt about it, we were both ill as you can get, after a city of hardly any sleep and constant abuse of our bodies. I was coughing my lungs out, leading to sneezing fits to be finished up by a flourish and trumpet. Snot factories, the both of us.
We got off the train to be ID'd for the first time. The ...
