... 8217;t cross any international borders. We wanted to visit Mongolia along the way and hence tailored our trip to what a lot of travellers now call the Trans-Mongolian (St Petersburg to Beijing).

We spent a few weeks hopping on and off the train on our way to Beijing - enjoy the stories and recount below!

... today cost 1000s although it’s common to see woman (of a certain age) wearing the latest fashions!!

Roisin was surprised as to the colour and vibrancy of the city. People were very friendly and willing to try to speak English. That has certainly changed. Like the Wizard of Oz I recall Moscow being in Black and white/Grey and it is now most definitely in glorious Technicolor.

... our fellow passengers were on the payroll of the Russian tourist board. Following on from the vodka, Leo pulls out cucumbers, bread and a huge slab of ham. He sends Alec to wash the cucumbers and begins chopping up the ham into thick slices. Clearly drinking vodka is an event. Alec returns and the small cucumbers are sliced lengthways. ... a couple of ticket kiosks, each with two doors and higgledy piggeldy queues leading up to the two doors. We thought we might see the armoury that day, and the cathedrals/churches the following day. Naturally, the lady at the desk had other ideas!
