... There are 3 English women in the next two cabins to me (Vicky, Linda and Susan doing this as a holiday) and about a dozen or so young Scandinavians in 2nd class further down the train. Other than that the train seems pretty deserted. Our 14 carriages are not needed for so few and we trundle along at an average of 40 mph...!

The train is of course lovely and warm and cosy but outside is a picture of frozen wilderness. ...

... time zones on the train today and the clocks go back an hour each time. It's 27 hours of hangover joy. Hoorah.

We sit playing cards for a few hours, groaning that just when it seems to be almost tea time, the clocks go back an hour.

In any event, Perm was purportedly the inspiration for the fictional city of Yuriatin to where the Zhivago family fled (or better Varikino,) during the Revolution. I had dreamed of seeing the "reading room" where Yuri and Lara found each other again, as well as the House of Figures. ... couple, Dmitry, 23, and Oksana, 19, newly married couple and pregnant. Very nice Russian couple, engaging and interested in speaking to us in English. Aside from Richard, a friendly American traveling from Moscow to Irkutsk and eventually all the way across the Trans-Sib to Vladivostok, we were the only tourists. We all debated the virtues of American collegiate sports, politics, traveling, and life in general, over many a beers. Good ...
