Welcome to Russia!

Well, the journey was long but agreeable. I had a long layover in Chicago so I treated myself to a day pass at the United Red Carpet Club for some peace and quiet and a good working surface. When I went to check-in with Lufthansa for my flight to Frankfurt, I was informed that the flight was oversold. I was then offered to fly to Dusseldorf instead and on to Moscow arriving about 2 hours later. For this I would be compensated with a business class seat. NO PROBLEM!!!! So, needless to say, the...

The Kremlin

Yep, the sun got up very early this morning as I suspected and so did I. Well, at least I was awake early!! I did head out to explore the Kremlin this morning and made it there shortly after it opened to avoid the hordes of tourists. It is so beautiful and much better that I had dreamt of. I find it amazing that so many churches were built in such proximity of each other and in the "backyard" of the Tsar. How many churches does one family need? Regardless, they are all different and beautiful...

A Day in Leningrad

In the morning we went to the Hermitage. We were there for about 3 hours and then wen to the Sadko Restaurant for lunch near the Europa Hotel. After lunch we went to the Beriozka[1] in the Sovietskaya Hotel. That night we went to the Kirov Ballet--the second best in the Soviet Union and saw a folk ballet. [2007: I really don't remember much from this particular day and my journal entry isn't particularly enlightening. I do remember that I thought the Hermitage was the most amazing place. It h...

First Day in Leningrad and a Clandestine Meeting

In the morning we went on a city tour to the Hermitage, Peter and Paul's Fortress, Smolny Cathedral, etc. After lunch we went on a tour of St. Isaac's Cathedral. [Editorial comment: This must be the tersest, most boring description of a day in Leningrad/St. Petersburg ever...] After dinner, I made the call. The one I'd been anticipating/dreading for weeks. Remember, this is back in the days of the Soviet Union, spies, refuseniks, etc. There was a guy who lived in my hometown near the Universi...

Moscow Part 2

... You just never know who you're going to meet when travelling. Early in the evening that day, just as I was going back to the hostel, the heavens opened over Moscow. I had seen the big black clouds rolling in and knew it would be a massive storm and it was. It was almost like a solid sheet of water falling for at least 30 minutes. Some people at the hostel were surprised at the turn in weather (had they not looked up in the sky, the clouds were hard to miss?) but they ...

Man U vs. Chelsea in the Champions League Finals!!

... bounce found the ball at the foot of Frank Lampard who calmly placed the ball in the back of the net. Just like I had seen with the Irish fans at the 1994 World Cup at Giants Stadium, there were people around me that wound up several rows away from their seat after the 2 minute long celebration that ensued the equalizing goal. The second half proves to be the best back-and-football I've ever seen. As the final whistle blows, I can't ...

... we went into the Armoury museum. There's some pretty impressive things in there, the Faberge eggs are beautiful. New Years was great. The hostel had food and drinks and we headed down to Red Square. I have to say though, that the fireworks are nothing compared to home. But it was still a good night and I think we all headed to bed around 7am. Today has pretty much been a write off, and then were back on the train at 10pm to head to St Petersberg. Thank god its only the one night!

Half-way through the trip

... new buildings and businesses are cropping up. Much has changed since our first trip. Included here are a few photos, definitely not our best. Not expecting to be able to connect to the Internet, etc., we didn't bring the necessary cords to download pictures from our camera. The photos attached here were taken on Tom's iphone, which easily downloads to his Mac. We're getting ready to meet the vice mayor of Zelenograd, so I must sign off now. More later.
